Help, I think I have indigestion

Hi Guys! I could do with some advice. I have been sticking seriously to my clean diet over the last couple of months after falling off the wagon for maybe 6 months. On my PT's instructions I'm having 6 meals a day and including a few protein shakes and all that is going great. The thing is about an hour after the protein shake particularly, I'm in major pain, belching etc, and can like feel stomach acids coming up. I've given up having a shake last thing at night due to the upset tummy gives me. And before you ask, yes the wind at this stage only goes in one direction, UP.

I just wondered if any of you guys and girls have altered your diet at some stage and had this happen. I have never suffered from this ever including 2 pregnancies and may years with protein shakes. The only thing that works to get rid of it is swigging down heaps of milk, normally done quickly at the fridge door straight out of the bottle! Cheers.

Not so good to hear your having trouble with indegestion. A lot of people get gas at the start of a high protein diet due to their bodies inability to process the protein correctly. Sometimes your body just needs time to adjust and get used to it.

Do you know if you're lactose intolerant at all?

I would jump on a course of pro-biotics. They help to ensure healthy working bowel flora. Which is the bacteria in your stomach that processes food and ensure optimal absorbtion of your foods. If you take these it should help decrease if not put a stop to bad digestion, gas or bloating..

You can pick these up from any good health store, health2000 does a bottle of Rheuteri from Natures Way for $30 for 30 caps. This should sort ya out! ;)

Cheers!

Thanks guys.

Laurasau, I'm using chocolate flavoured Balance 100% whey protein powder.

Nicksmith3, I am having far more protein than ever before. Like heaps of chicken, a yoghurt, PP etc. That's a good point you made a point about how much you body works digesting protein, should I taking extra fliuds with meals to help it all go down easier? I'm trying to drink at least 2 litres a day as it is.

Useless info here folks... indigestion has a very fancy techanical name called dyspepsia.

Look no further than 'Losec' alphagirl for the acids coming up, the wind may then go away too.

Acid reflux is especially common with late night feeds where you then go and lay horizontal to sleep making it easier for acid to crawl up and burn.

Clears up in 2-4 days, eventually just take it when u feel it coming on, but I now never need them at all and I went for 2 years thinking I had a sore throat or cold coming every day it was that bad.

I think it is prescription.

Why choose Losec over a probiotic Android?

I'm curious...

Stay away from the quickies. All they do is cover up the symptoms. They are an anti acid and what your body is doing is producing too much acid, possibly because you don't produce enough acid in the first place. By using an anti acid such a quickies it triggers your body to produce even more acid. So it works in the short term but can make things a lot worse in the long term. Some doctors prescribe a HCL based medication such as Locec or Rantidine which is a preventative and balances it all out.

Probiotics may help but I would say go to your doctor and have a chat to them about it. I hate to say it but they will probably also tell you that milk, caffiene and alcohol need to be kept away from (Milk does the same thing as quickies).

It kind of sounds like you might have some sort of reaction to what you are eating. Doctor should be able to work out what it is and treat the cause rather than the syptom.

On my doctor's advice.

I had persevered with the problem it for 2+ years so I did as I was told :-)

You know, it would go away then come back again so i always thought it was a cold coming, not acid reflux. I tried quickies and milk etc and they didn't help long-term at all, Losec did. I didn't try probiotics and no-one recommended I do them either.

Losec doesn't just alleviate it actually improves the problem enough that you no longer need Losec.

Hi guys, thanks for all that great advice, I really appreciate the indepth help you gave me.

I headed off to the doctor and he's prescribed SOLOX, which I imagine is similar to Losec? Have to take 2 tablets everyday for 4 weeks then reduce down to one, then one only when required. Seems to have worked a treat because have been sympton free since Friday. \:D/

Seeing I was there, I sorted out painkillers for the hormonal headaches I get that have been plaguing me and stopped my training once too often.

It's funny how you tend to put up with stuff for ages and never do anything about it. It totally bugs my husband that I do that because he goes at the drop of a hat for anything.
