how long before digested protein is in the blood stream for use? that is, once its digested how long does it stay in the body to be used.

I am wondering...if I eat meat late at night I know it takes 2-3 hrs to digest, but does it, once digested, release slowly through the body like a low GI carb does or is digested protein just like any other digested protein.

I always think by eating meat late at night i'm eating slow-release protein....but want to know if i'm taking advantage of it's slow release properties or just the slow digestion time.

If it's slow digestion only then eating meat is just like waiting 3 hrs and downing a WPI and I would have to wake up in the night and have a 2nd serving...

Any clues?

as i understand it(and i'm still learning lots) once the meat is digested the protein released from it is absorbed rapidly.

the majority of protein is absorbed in the form of single aminos, but some are taken up in combinations of 2 or 3 aminos. different types of aminos are utilised selectively, but absorption is rapid i.e once free amino acids are isolated or fractioned the body will use them.

cassein seems to be the popular choice for night time because when the stomachs acids hit it, it congeals into a sort of gel slowing the rate digestive enzymes can break it down.it digests slowly hence the drip feeding affect of protein (over a period of about 7 hours).

i'm thinking that maybe optimass would be able to explain things more indepth/accurately?

from what i know protein can only be absorbed in tri- and di- peptide fractions and amino acids thus a whey protein powder with these protein fractions will get into your blood in 15-20mins. I read somewhere that amino acids from a shake will still be in your blood after 2 hours after which levels start to clear rapidly, not sure about amino acids from meat.

Meat, compared to a shake (liquids), will have a tiny surface area in the stomach so i'm thinking it will take ages to release the amino acids as enzymes have to digest the proteins at free ends first, mechanical digestion aslo takes place however so this speeds up the process. so what i'm thinking is whey protein is like a 'high GI protein' as its easily digested and absorbed after digestion whareas meat is like a 'low GI protein' as it take ages to digest. just a theory tho. :shrug: like gazza sez casein congeals into a micellar structure which takes special enzymes to digest and has a smaller surface area

what i wana know is, say you can only digest 30grams of protein at a time, would it be sufficient to have 3 meals a day in which you consume 90 grams of protein 30grams from a quick source like whey, 30grams from a medium source like eggs/lean meat and 30grams from a slow release like casein?

but...yes digestion in the stomach is delayed for casein due to the globby way it settles, and meat is just tough to digest period...but I want to know once digested and the stomach releases it into the intestines for absorbing (remember NOTHING gets absorbed int the stomach right? else the acid would get through too), so...once it gets released is there a difference in speed.

point is....does meat take 3 hrs to digest and then once its digested it is presented or released into the body as quickly as WPI would? forget the difference in time it takes to get to the stomach and digested we know meat and casein takes longer than WPI to get through, but what happens next...

because I'm wondering if I eat meat at night, 3 hrs later does the meat get released as aminos and absorbed within the next hour? (In which case I'm low on protein at 4th hour again)....makes sense?
