GYMS IN AUCKLAND CENTRAL

That Aldene is one big dude, massive back on him.

I heard through a friend of mine from Hawkes Bay that he uses BIG weights too. Like 35kg side raises!

Very impressive power indeed.

I haven't seen Aldene train since the late 90's & even then he was repping 170 benches.

The boys at Sparta reckon he's DLing well over 300 for 8-10's, squating 220's for high reps, and rowing 5+ plates with perfect form. I cant personally verify this, might go for a train there at some stage now that on of my SM training friends is working there.

Aldene would make a great strongman competitor, but from what I hear he's keen to achieve a few BBing goals.

My first comp was the Nth Harbour 2007 and he was backstage. To a Nov. Athletic doing his first comp, he was just ridicously big and dominated the whole show. I was suprised he didnt go for the Nationals that year?

The second place guy in that class also had great potential for such a young guy, amazing wheels, third was Spencer Hiatt who looked great also.

Most other shows the second placed guy would have probably been first, but unfortunately big Aldene showed up and spoilt the party, in fact Sparta gym took out the mens, ladies physique (Aldenes wife) and Open Figure to, must be a great gym to train at.

Tell him to go to Get Strength in Onehunga. This gym is owned and run by some of new zealands top powerlifters. They are one of the only places that sells specific strength training equipment and loads of strength athletes and powerlifters train there. This place is not your average gym as you cannot just rock along and join up. They only deal with people who want to increase thier stength, not bodybuilders or people who want to get in shape. But if your friend is serious about getting stronger I am sure they will let him train there. The gym has loads of pieces of equipment for strength developement that I have not seen anywhere else ,and I have been in the industry for 21 years. Have a look at thier website

Yeah we both know Thommo & Mr Strachan, as well as the PL guys like Lousich & Stachan jr. I'll give them a bell tomorrow. Probably the best choice as he wants variation of bars for squatting (Safety Squat, Cambered etc) and the accomodating resistance toys (bands, chains etc).

I hope he's serious, he's got the Sydney's Strongest Man Pro Show in 7 weeks! :P But you're right the GS range is pretty good - front squat harness, steel logs, and especially their Glute Ham Raise. Their Safety Squat Bar is a favourite too - I'm stuffed if I can even break 200kg on the low box!!

After talking to him tonight & drawing up his programme for the next 7 weeks it looks like he'll check out Les Mills Victoria Park, but likely to join GetStrength (if they'll have him :P ) and get down to Gillies on occasion to work with Wookie & Stas on some Oly technique applicable to Strongman.

BTW Congrats Jono Mac on also making the Pro Show invite for Sydney!!!

Here's a pic from our last train in Napier - you can't see the 10's on the end but thats 350kg!! I hope the Oly bars in Les Mills can take it! I'm sure a cheap chinese bar would've bent to bits last night.
