GYMS IN AUCKLAND CENTRAL

Just looking for a gym for my good buddy who's had the misfortune of moving to Auckland! :P He's living in Remuera & working in CBD.

Shiny chrome & mirrors are very secondary as he trains Strongman, however weights and lots of them are important (He's ex-National PLing Champ, NZ Strongest Man 2008, Hawkes Bay Strongest Man 2009).

A variety of bars (e.g. Cambered, Safety Squat), bands & chains would be great, but would settle for a gym that has a good squat rack, heaps of plates & Dumbells (going up over 60kg).

Any suggestions welcome (other than "he should've moved to Wellington to PowerHouse"! :pfft: ).

Cheers

Les Mills - Victoria Park, primo equipment, hammer strength machines too!

Ummmm? Les Miserables don't usually like big boys who move big weights..... unless Victoria Park is more friendly?

He's a very quiet chap, not a grunter or ego trainer by any means, so as long as they are good with using chalk, bringing extra equipment in (if needed), and probably more importantly do they have good Olympic bars (not cheap Chinese ones)? We got the heave ho from one gym for bending a bar (rack pulls or band squats have that tendency with cheap bars!).

Gillies Ave gym. No frills - geared towards olympic/powerlifting but maybe not so strongman...

Not sure who you have to get in contact with to be a member of this gym/get a key but one of the PLers should be able to fill you in.

We talked about Gillies, I've trained there & enjoyed it (managed a PR Deadlift even after reading the "board of Oly greats").

Pro's - the weights & attitudes there, and of course big Jono Mac & Simon train there. He could also get some great Oly help from Stas & co.

Con's - I think Nickoli would be a bit limited by lack of variety of gear there after being spoilt at his current gym.

Regardless of where he trains fulltime he'll do a few sessions at Gillies for the above Pros!

Agreed. Gillies does have a tyre that he could play with as well as a sled (although last time I checked Wookie has broken the strap that connects to the sled, but he could use chains to drag it outside). There's no log.

There was another strongman training at Gillies (Rob, ortho surgeon?) but I haven't seen him in a while now.

I'm a bit off topic with this but gotta ask anyway.

I train from home at the moment and will have to join a gym soon as I'm increasingly needing to use equipment that I just don't have, (anyone know some good lat excersizes I can do with free weights or body weight? can't do palm forward pull ups yet.)

before I do join one though I think I need to get familiar with "Gym Etiquette" as the comment above has me worried. I "grunt" and make quite a bit of noise when I'm pushing to failure. Is this considered egocentric or posey?

I guess i shouldn't really care too much as I'm a narcissistic egomaniac deep down anyway, 8) (surley you need to be a bit of a narcissist to do this shit in the first place?) but would be good to know these things.

I know big Rob Orec from in the original Powerdome (Dunedin), and he used to train with my old training partner in Chch. He's in the States nowdays I believe.

As for strongman training, I think Nickoli's sorted between Matt R's gear, Justin K & Regan 'the stoneman'. It's more just the regular gymwork EU.

Nickoli said he'll definately be down at Gillies for a session or 3! No doubt Wookie will introduce him. He's going to check out Les Mills & Getstrength as well - if someone could tell me where GS is!!!

Also what is Frank Boulgaris' gym (BTS??) like?

Like Laura said grunting is for massive weights, of note big Aldene (sp?) in Napier is known to bar row 220kg plus without a sound!!

We generally don't disturb anyone else in the gym, even when training squats / DLs over 250. Possibly get a bit vocal when going for PR's tho!(personal records).

Probably most PLers bone of contention with gym ettiquette is people curling in the squat rack! C'mon surely you can pick a barbell with dimes on the end up from the floor! The quarter ton waiting to be squatted cant be! :P While I'm on curls, there is no need to grunt or yell while curling - FFS its just a curl!!

I guess the general rule is not to interfere with others ability to train, or to detrimentally impact on their training experience.
