Don't know about the nutritional component but cooking them kills bacteria etc that can give you food poisoning. From my understanding it's not recommended to eat raw eggs because of the food poisoning risk.

Any one else know anything about this??

 You hit the nail on the head. Eating raw eggs can give you salmonella dub.

yup ive actually had that g8 times had by me and the toilet!!!

my understanding of salmonella was that it carried in the hens fieces so as long as the shell was washed u were fine, although granted no guarantees.

optimass: thanks for the link, was quitre interesting and good to have the conclusion actually backed up. cheers

Ive been reading the same; eggs have to be cooked for your body to use the protein.

Have you looked into liquid egg whites? Pasteurized so safe to drink and protein usable.

Here in the uk im paying £2.69 - $6.89 for a 1kg bottle with 33 egg whites.

Raw eggs are a risk, with the risk outweighing the benefits. Salmonella enteritidis infects the ovaries of healthy appearing hens and contaminates the eggs before the shells are formed. So washing the egg shell will not prevent Salmonella.

There are quite a few studies out on raw v cooked eggs. Salmonella yes with unpasturised raw eggs but likelyhood is about 1 egg in 30,000 are effected (not high but still a risk). Quick resolution here is to only buy pasturised eggs. I have also read that raw eggs also don't contain as much protein as cooked eggs due to a change in the protein structure through cooking - cooked eggs have more protein???

Perhaps someone could provide some clarity here?

For me personally, i have my eggs raw as i simply can't consume a great deal of cooked eggs after everything else eaten prior.

from what I read, raw eggs contain a protein called "avidin", and this can impair absorbtion of a B-group vitamin called Biotin.

Supposedly this is not a biggy unless you consume large numbers of raw eggs.

I can't be bothered cooking them for my alsation dog, sometimes when I am low on portions of raw meat I throw in a couple of raw eggs to boost the protein content. No complaints from my dog so far, but hey I never conducted a scientific study as I said "I was low on time to cook the eggs".

You get denaturation with cooking (protein loses its structure and unfolds) and acidity (HCL in stomach). At the end of the day, all whole proteins will be broken down (removal of bonds btw AAs) into AAs and then used for whatever purpose (making glucose, fatty acids, ongoing repair.....this is of course dependant on the overall calorie and protein intake).

severe, did u see the picture of the author of the book on ur link. i think after seeing him i have to believe him.

thanks for all the thoughts guys.

That book is never going to be read as long as it has that pic on it.

I was just referring to teh contrast in opinions over the matter, but good call. 8)

In saying that, since commenting in this thread I have stopped taking raw eggs with my shakes, and actually feel a lot better generally. Placebo or real? who knows, but I may keep it up.
