Drinking during..

My old trainer used to advise me not to drink during my work out - said that it took blood from my muscles to help my stomach digest and i'd loose my pump druing the work out.

I've followed what he's taught me but i've always wondered if he's just blowin hot air on that one. He also suggested working out before I ate in the morning for the same reason.

Any veiws on this? :D

I haven't heard of not drinking anything during a workout, do you not get dehydrated? There is the notion that if you are even 1% dehydrated you don't perform to your optimum ability. I have always stuck with this theory and remain hydrated at all times! Cardio in the morning before you eat is supposed to be a better fat burner than in the evenings, but it can be alot more difficult to do.

Um...I'm with Vee on the fluids thing...dehydration will set you back in both cardio and weights. Even on my current, short-ish routine (done n dusted in around 50mins), I can go through over a litre of water.

As for working out before eating, that also sounds like smoke to me... yes, working out before cardio (first thing in the morning, again like Vee says) can be good for fatburning, but before a weights workout? I don't think I've ever seen that advocated, certainly not recently. In fact, quite the opposite: there's a lot of evidence that a protein shake before, after, and often combined with fast-digesting carbs afterwards, is an effective, if not essential, muscle-BUILDING technique.

I'd be interested in what the more knowledgeable come up with, but both those sound (to me personally) either bunkum or too old-school to be valid.

No so far haven't gotten dehydrated

I've taken to chewing sugarless gum though during the work out - i don't do it often just if i'm working out after nights

He is pretty old school i think - but i'm slow to argue since i did lose 50lbs listening to him.

:D

I do find if i eat before i work out i feel more sluggish but i think that is in my head - more than my stomach LOL

His reasoning for the cardio first was that it helped get the muscles ready and pumped with blood - *shakes head* i didn't argue when i saw the results - but i'm not seeing as many results now so i'd like to vary the work out a bit..... that and i'm not happy with the diet at all - it was VERRRRY restrictive

:(

LOL i totally understand that - if i had a full tummy or was full of water while doing crunches it would not be a pretty scene

There are quite a few new supplements that you are supposed to drink during a workout... I can't remember what they are...but just thought this was interesting.

I think you should try changing your routine as the body adapts, so you should see better results. It won't hurt to try drinking during your wrkout, and see how it goes. personally, i do drink during my workout, but i find that it is better if it is small frequent sips, and if you are dehydrated before you start woring out, then you are setting yourself up to fail.

i find if im well enuf hydrated b4 i get in there i only need to sip to keep mouth wet (drys out from my heavy ass breathing during sets), but if im not hydrated b4 workout, i tend to drink like a fish while im in there.

If you feel dehydrated shortly after, chances are you were dehydrated during your workout, and this will be affecting the intensity and effectiveness...

Then there is the whole electrolyte versus normal water debate... you may find that something like powerade or horleys replace hydration helps you recover quicker and avoid hydration.

EDIT: also, if you drink chilled water during your workout you will help to prevent overheating. it is ulikely that you will actually overheat in an air conditioned gym if you know your limits, but your brain will limit your physical exertion to help prevent this, so by cooling yourself down, in theory you should be able to perform at a higher level

I drink a 1.5 litre bottle every workout, I can't train without a water bottle as between each and every set I drink so I'd be at the fountain too often if I didn't have a bottle.

honestly here...I can feel my muscles take on the water and expand. I doubt there's digestion going on tbh...water? hello...no digestion necessary

Hmm never thought of that

I still don't know if i'll be able to take in too much water - i've never been a big drinker even on the Ice - under 50lbs of goalie gear and sweating buckets i'd rinse my mouth out and spray my face but the second i took more than a mouthful of a swallow i felt sluggish - it's wierd :?

..and by drinking chilled water (which has to get to body temperature some how) you do in fact expend a scant few calories (in fact isn't a joule the energy required to raise 1 gramme of water one degree C?).

The specific heat capacity of water is 4.18J per gram....

which basically means that it takes 4.18J to heat 1 gram of water by 1 degree celsius

Then this suggests that despite all the theory arguing for drinking water during your workout, if it makes you feel sluggish, it is not the best solution

LOL that's for hockey though - not sure what it will do with my work out- i find with hockey cuz there's more spontanious bursts of movement and isometric movement (crouched in a half sitting position for 2-5 min while sliding from side to side quickly! LOL) my level of intensity is greater for longer periods on the ice - I'd love to bring that to the gym i just haven't found out how. :?

And 4.18kiloJoules eq 1 calorie, right? So, 1litre (1000 grammes of water) raised by eg 10 degrees C equals 10 calories required. Not a lot, but some...

well monday AM i'll try out the tips - and see how it goes - AND since i have your attention here LOL what are the veiws on working out twice in a day? :)

It depends. if i was going to do two workouts a day, i would do strength in the morning,(mabye with cardio if i was cutting) then abs and cardio in the evening.

if you say for example, do legs in the morning, then again in the afternoon...actually, as i write this, i see how it could mabye work... i find that if i have worked a muscle group, i can't do it again properly for between 1-3 days.

how were you planning to do 2 workouts a day?

i.e. what structure? 1 strength, 1 cardio?

Well finally convinced the weight watcher girls at work to come back to the gym with me

but they want to sleep first - it's my day off i don't waste it sleeping or nothing gets done (i only get 2 days off including the day i get off work)

So i had originally planned to go to he gym in the AM at 0730

Do 30 min carido - walk/run and bike

then Legs - inclinded press, walking lunges and reverse leg curls (feel free to add what you think may help to that but there is no smith's machine at my gym)

Then chest and or back

chest - incline bench db press with acending wts + decending - pec deck - push ups - front db lift (hard to explain but if you want i can elaborate later)

Back- bent over flys - wide and close grip lat pull downs - seated rows

then abs and stretches

IF i am going in the afternoon - i'll likely wait and do cardio with them - only do a warm up of cardio in the AM - since they won't do wts with me but will do cardio and abs and stretches.....

any input on how i can better arrange this???

you might find it hard to do legs in the mornign then cardio in the afternoon. although if you are sleeping inbetween... you might find that if you have a good meal before you go to sleep it is ok.

if you can get there 20 minutes before them in the afternoon, then you should be able to do a body part, meaning your morning workout is less cluttered, and you should have a better cardio session. (better=burn more fat)
