Beef varieties?

Bulkup

Recommended Posts

Hey I'm new to these forums so hiya fellas!

I've read that one of the leanest beef cuts is sirloin steak.

Now I was just wondering how does rump steak & beef scnitzel compare?

They are both much cheaper, and from looks and texture, seem to be much lower in fat no?

Any idea?

hi there bulkup, I have noticed when shopping that the different cuts vary in thier fat content from butcher to butcher, though sirloin often has less fat in the meat itself, rump will often have a large amount of fat onit but that is easy to cut off.

I go for price and the look of the meat

holly shit!! do you mean you don't eat 2-3 servings of red meat a day???

what is your normal protein source?

I don't know if i would call animal fat a good source of fat. I don't know where this falls into the grand scheme of things. I know the fat of lamb is better, more of the essentials in it or something.

I'm a guy who gets his meat from chicken & fish products.

Easy to cook c.f. beef.

I thought that beef is proportionally low on saturated fat?

I mean I get polys from fish, and some monos from the canola oil I cook in... what I probably meant to say is that right now my fat ratio is around 15%, gotta boost to 20% for my ideal 40/40/20 ratio.. I think I eat too much protein!!!

From my experience with the odd Cow ;) Scotch Fillet and Sirloin or Porter house are top of the line, that is taste and tenderness, (and price)

Rump and Topside are less tasty and are tougher, therefore need to be cooked real slow.

Leanness isn't much of an issue because you can trim most of the fat off the outside edge, with the exception being schnitzel because it is so thin and can be tricky to work with.

I have cooked Topside in the GF grill and no fat has run off, but it cooks it too fast hence it turns out tough.

But Sirloin grills good, with very little fat running off.

Here is a little bit of light reading about the virtues of beef (and the fat)

Rump is the leanest cut i have observed but taste wise sirloin is good but i really like rump and it's a hella ov lot cheaper too.

Also you can try buying venison, i have this all the time and is leaner than any type of beef cut. Only downside is venison can be expensive but i get it for free.

  • 2 weeks later...

Hey again, I've been trying to find the energy values for premium beef mince to no avail, can anyone help out??

I know that the fat content goes premium

I just had a great big cheat meal of 250g (raw weight) mince in a thick pasta sauce, 1 cup of oatmeal (uncooked weight) with heaps of almonds and yoghurt, and 1 whole 1kg tub of that cappucino frappe yoghurt (damn that's nice!) and I'm estimating that lunch came to about 7000kJ or so eek! Damn I feel really bloated now lol!

I actually want to eat more now, but my stomach won't let me!

Animal fats are NOT good for you.

Ive always been told this.. well at least fats from meat.

I can easily get loads of protein without red meat... In fact I only eat red meat once a week or something.

Eggs

Chicken

cottage Cheese

Tuna

Whey

does it for me just fine :)
