One thing to try to see if it works for you is the DC method of doing calves... I know it has been working well for me, as someone that has always struggled with calf development.

Pick an exercise (e.g. seated CR's), go as heavy as you can go for 12 reps...

But, the movement is as follows:

- Explode up

- 5 second negative

- 15 second hold in a stretched position

So 1 rep has a positive phase, and a 20 second negative phase... It will start to burn like crazy after about 6-7 reps, and you'll be playing mind games with yourself by 10 reps \:D/

Gut it out though, they say pain is only weakness leaving the body :pfft:

When you get 12 reps, step the weight up the next time you do it... push yourself...

my calfs have been graduating from '14yr old boys calfs' to '24yr old man calfs' ova the past few mths. and ive done it by doing all my calf raises on the leg press machine.

i do 40 reps ,30reps then 25reps, then 20reps drop set - full motion fast but controlled

then (toes pointing in)25reps, 20reps, 15 reps full range but pausing at either end

just anotha option :shifty:

calves are a bitch if you don't have em naturally, its taken me years and years to get them to a respectable level, be prepared to work them frequently past the pain barrier and in a variety of ways if you want them to improve, basically a very stubborn muscle.

The real funny thing is, seeing woman walking around in high heals with monster calves that many BBs would die for  :pfft:

As far a proportion goes, your calve circumference should be only slightly smaller than your arms. You only need be concerned (consider them lagging) if they are an inch or more smaller.

so no need to be concerned with 11 inch calves if your arms are 11 1/2 inches????

thats in proportion as far as your concerned

If a guy has those measurements and has a 40" chest then I would be worried not just about the calves then the arms too, if however he had a a 28" chest then I'm thinking the calves are the least of his concerns. :-s

Yeah but I wouldnt die for the damage theyre doing to their knees and lower back etc...

I wouldve thought calves should be slightly bigger than your arm circuference?!

Good advice Mr Natural, I agree.

Even pro's have difficulty building GREAT calves. Some started with weak ones and were able to build monsters (Arnold) others remained their weakest bodypart despite years of bombing them (Ronnie, Dexter).

From my experience calves seem to be the one bodypart where caucasion and island guys have it over most afro american competitors (with some notable exceptions like Vince Taylor, Paul Dillett).

The main message in most of these posts is that you have to train them extremely hard and fairly frequently as they are such a resistant, stubborn bodypart.

One interesting point: Dancers have great calves as they "Point" or walk on their toes for long periods of time whilst learning. As a predominately slow twitch muscle, calves seem to grow well from this frequent, sustained loading, especially during ones formative years.

my problem is that ive got 19'' calfs with 18'' arms. bearly do any work to my callfs apart from high reps to keep the hardness

Once again I must say, I thought calves should be slightly bigger than arms (provided BOTH are of a decent size ie obviously looking like a bodybuilder's)?! :?

Except for a few rare individuals (e.g. Chris Dickerson), most well developed body builders will have slightly larger arms than calves and this is generally accepted as normal (even desirable) from a judging perspective.

I don't say this as a commentary on trend I.e. Legs in the 70s were significantly smaller than today's specimens but as a statement on genetic potential. It's also backed up as a genetic trait by reading about body size predictions in trained athletes:

http://www.weightrainer.net/maximum_bodypred.html

As with everything bodywise/genetic, there will be individuals who are to the left or right (smaller or bigger) than those in the middle of the statistical bell curve.
