Taken from Product Page:Horley's ICE Whey

100% Whey Protein Isolate

ICE Whey - the fastest, purest protein, extracted using cation exchange technology. ICE Whey has been engineered to optimise the natural amino acid profile for serious muscle gains: more BCAA's = more fuel for muscle growth.

  • 100% Whey Protein Isolate, minimum 90% protein content
  • Highest levels of naturally occurring Branch Chain Amino Acids (8917mg per serve), the key aminos for recovery and growth
  • Over 7g Glutamine including precursors per serve for enhanced catabolic protection
  • Boosted with hydrolysed isolate fractions for rapid and complete protein absorption
  • Virtually zero carbs and zero fat
  • Gluten free

My Background:

Brand new to bodybuilding/going to the gym, been going for about 6 months now.

I purchaced this about 5 months ago, and still have about a quater left (I purchased a 3 KG tub on special, as they were changing the containers.)

Taste in water:5/10

I find this rarther bland in water, to the point where I find it hard to swallow in the morning, although it is not so bad in water for a post workout shake. (although I tend to use milk for post workout shakes)

Taste in Milk:7/10

I find it is better tasting in Milk, and it even has the nutritional information when mixed with milk on the side.

Cost:6(7)/10

It is expensive, but it is a very pure protein powder, and has added glutamine. I Purchased it on special for $150 for a 3KG Tub, hence the (7)

  • 3KG:It has an RRP of around 250, but after a quick look it appears to be available for $210.
    Around $2.50 per serving
  • 1.32KG: It has an RRP of around 120, but after a quick look it appears to be available for $102 (from Punch Supplements).
    Around $2.80 per serving
  • 800G: It has an RRP of around 75, but after a quick look it appears to be available for $65 (from Punch Supplements).
    Aound $2.95 per serving

EDIT:If you PM Me, I might be able to give you a better deal, no harm in trying. For ICE Whey, and other Horleys Products

Nutrient Makeup:9/10

ICE WHEY (Cation Exchange Whey Protein Isolate (90%), Hydrolysed Whey Protein Isolate(5%)), L-Glutamine, Flavour, Thickener (415), Sweetener (955 - Sucralose).

This is one of the Purest protein powders I have seen, and has added Glutamine, which is useful. The protein make up is quite good, but i'm not sure what the other 5% is. The important thing is that it is Whey Protein Isolate, not Whey Protein Concentrate.

Mixibility:9/10

I find that it mixes really well, and can be easily shaken in any jar.

Side Effects:6/10

I find that occaisionally it gives me gas.

Other Notes:

I have recently purchased a casein protein to mix with it, and find that they mix well. (I plan to write a review on this later)

It is more suitable for an intermediate to advanced bodybuilder, or someone who is on a low carb diet.

Overall:7/10

Overall, this is a good protein powder, but I would recommend buying a smaller container to try it first, or getting a sample. It is possible to purchase 1 serving size bottles for $6.50 (I have seen these at health 2000 shops).

I do not have much experience with other protein powders, but I have found it to be the least pleasant tasting when compared to CytoSport Complete Whey Protein Cocoa Bean(A friend gave me a sample), or Optimum 100% Casein Protein vanilla.

A final note, as this is my first review, any feedback would be appreciated, and i apologise for any errors i may have made. Also, a quick thanks to laurasaur, who has written many helpful reviews which i have used for inspiration for this one.

Nice review, Lambo. Have you tried mixing this with a teaspoon, or do you always use a shaker? (Shaking's too much like hard work for me!)

As for the gas, that's generally caused by the lactose, I think. Being a pure isolate, this protein should have less lactose than most, but if you're drinking lots of milk with it, that could be the culprit.

Agree Pseu .... I find ICE is best taken with water or orange juice post training. I don't see the point in mixing a powder so pure with milk personally - but I wouldn't use another product whilst conditioning for a show. It is the highest protein gram for gram than any other available. (tests consistantly at 91.8% protein ... a true isolate powder, hense the price).

My typical post workout shake consists of one serving of Horley's Ice Whey and 1 serving of optimum nutrition 100% Casein protein, made up with...a mug of milk.probably around 300 mls.

But the pre-workout shakes were/are always made with water.

What flavour ICE where you using?

i find choclate the best. The Ripped Factors choc is also paletable. (Is ICE with caffine + thermo powder).

I have yet to try this, but chocolate and orange juice?

:?

and I think that if i ever try to "cut up", then I might try the Ripped Factors

Im not so sure about the Ripped factors compared to the ICE. The thermos in the Ripped factors are pretty minimal and I doubt they would do much. Not worth the extra $ IMO. :) The ICE however is a pretty good isolate. :)

Agree .... but it gives you a good kick start to the day.

Choc + Orange = Jaffa

C4 Metabolic Complex: Caffeine, Carnitine, HCA and Chromium, to assist with fat metabolism via four different pathways

Possibly it might be better idea to buy ICE and use the extra money to purchase a separate thermo.

however, it doesn't look like it is much more to get the Ripped, and it is only around $10 more than the ICE, whereas a good thermo will set you back at least 50 (afaik) and even L-Carnitine will be at least $30...

I'm not sure what HCA or Chromium do, or how effective they are...

Horley's Ice is a relatively good product - prefer the Vanilla flavour - mixes better in water, however there is a grainy residue, possibly all the additives that they put in it.

Find it is a tad expensive here in Australia. Just found a natural protein powder with 27g protein per serve but without all the artificial flavours etc and much cheaper too!

What do you mix it with?

i haven't noticed that problem with mine, but maybe I just don't pay attention...

Horelys Ice Whey uses Cation Exchange Whey Protein Isolate. Eat Me 100% Isolate and Balance use Ion Exchange Whey Protein Isolate. And Red 8 uses Microfiltered Whey Protein Isolate. Is there a difference for the user?

Micro-filtered is preferable as it keeps whey's subfractions intact.

Have a read through this link (nearer to the bottom of the page) for a basic summing up of the difference between ion-exchange and micro-filtered. I'm sure there are more in-depth explanations, but this should give you a quick rundown.

Based on my chemistry knowledge, i wouldn't be surprised if Cation Exchange Whey Protein and Ion Exchange Whey Protein were the same thing, as they are semi the same thing, with a cation being a positivly charged ion.

From reading around, it seems that although Ion Exchange delivers higher protein per gram, it removes some valuable "subfractions", reducing the overall use of the protein.
