Gyms in New Plymouth

Hey all

I have backed off on the diet a little.

I joined the YMCA gym, and got a good trainer (Ryan) whos put me on a boot camp style training, flipping tractor tyres and pulling them along mixed with high intensity cardio twice a week and weights and strength for the rest.

Seems like a good start to get me going.

I have been experimenting with the weight levels,

I leg press 205Kg,

Shoulder Press 160Kg

bench press 110Kg? (I thought this was really low)

Dumb bells feel good at about 45 Kg

These are the top end for reps, and can just finish a 3 set at these levels.

What do you guys suggest for working at?

Month one starts on Friday morning with me and the tractor tyre getting real friendly I expect the to be some swearing at the end of it heh.

Oh,

Still looking for a training buddy that is willing to give me a good kicking when I hit the wall in a month.

I will report back as I go through the pain and gain some!

Congratulations on joining the Y - a great choice. I wonder if I can take credit for that.

Ryan is fantastic.

Would a female training partner be any use to you? I can leg press 240kg ! :)

Thats impressive!

I think you would do just fine :) as long as you are willing to push me when I need it then hell yes!

Anyone know of where I can see pics of the gyms? I'll be in NP the 3rd week of Feb for a week and am looking for a gym. I've used the one in Egmont Street on a previous visit - can't remember the name. It was ok, but a tad expensive for a casual.

Basically I'd like something with a good squat rack, deadlift, range of dumbbells - up to 100 pounds, and chin bar. From above it seems like the YMCA gym is ok, but it would be good to see some pics. I've done the Google search and can't find any pics of these places.

i go to the rampage fitness in westown as it was cheaper then the one in town but the one in westown is currently getting done up so all the people from our gym got to use the one in town and man there are some big guys there! (me in 5 months lol) i enjoy rampage they have a friendly staff and friendly people that mind their own buisness. ive been to cityfitness and used their 1 week free pass it was alright there they had more range of equipment but i think i enjoy the environment at rampage.theres a new gym opening up called jetts so im going to go check that one out, its got a special deal for the first 150 or 200 members to join which includes a 24/7 pass so ill be in for that lol.

rampage - cheap, 24 hours, enough said

But wait - there's more !

Rampage is producing plenty of comp winners recently. Brendon Lawrence - 1st in his class at the Proformance CNI Champs; Julie Bains 4th in her figure class at the NABBA Nats in a huge class of 11 competitors; Farah Deobhakta - 1st in Figure at the NABBA Nats in her class and 1st in Figure and Physique at the Waikato NZIFBB Champs yesterday; and Sharon Edmunds 1st yesterday at NZIFBB Waikato in the Open Physique Over 55kg class. Well done everybody. Rampage knows how to breed 'em.

My turn next year - watch this space ! :)

I have always trained at city fitness when through for work

Friendly staff but not really set up for hard core weight users as mentioned before they have no cable row only 1 piece of most things

Heard Mr NZ Phil Kuklinski owns a gym there

Rigger if you can let us k ow what your gym is mate that would be great

It is awesome I've trained at all the naki gyms and the Inglewood facilities are second to none as far as general weight training goes. Unless your looking for rows and rows of cardio gear it's awesome! Feel free to give me a call if you want to have a look through. 021-53-53-19. And it's super cheap!!

three years on - how are the New Plymouth gyms shaping up??

from what I've read on this thread, I'll probably be heading to World or Inglewood.

dead-lifting heavy on Wednesday in the Naki (visiting for two days) and want somewhere I can create a bit of atmosphere, or at the least not get kicked out

Do World Gym and the Inglewood facilities still operate? Fine to deadlift in them?? Any info would be great, cheers.

World Gym is now Rampage there are 2 one in the middle of town and another over by the Hospital (called Rampage West) they both would be fine with dead lifting.

The Inglewood Gym is great too definitely fine with dead lifting etc... and have some fantastic gear. I have been suggesting that the Inglewood gym put in an honesty box so people like you can come along for a casual train maybe drop $5 in it (its only $130 for a whole year) but they haven't and they are getting super strict with members only - they say "they are going through security footage and cancelling memberships of anyone who brings a non member" really dumb as I have taken non members along on occasion all of who have trained with me once or twice and then gone on to get memberships. I totally agree that non members shouldn't be able to frequent the gym with out paying but there should be some common sense applied.
