Max Heart Rate

Hi team,

This question relates to what one can learn from measuring heart rate: On three occasions recently doing really intense cardio, I had a Polar monitor on, which recorded max heart rates at close to the (220-age) maximum.

What can I learn from the fact that I was working at up to 100% ?

A. that my ticker's in comparatively good shape, 'cos it handled the abuse?

B. that my ticker's in bad shape, 'cos it had to work that hard?

Just curious, really - any views?

good question TFB. I have a rotary in my chest, it goes like a humming bird whether I am fit or not. Therefore i also get up in the really high percentages when running or whatever. Different strokes for different folks. Some of my really unfit clients have a much lower heart rate than others also. The biggest thing is the '220 - your age' measure is pretty innaccurate. its is a generic measure that gives you an idea. Sort of like the BMI measurement. Good for eff all. :evil: You could do a max heart rate test and work out what range you want to work in from there?

I really wonder where he keeps the peripheral port :roll:

lol, had to look up peripheral port to figure out what you on about TFB. This is what google told me "Peripheral porting is the most extreme form of rotary breathing enhancement - and it's (by far!) the loudest."

ha ha ... I guess that means the peripheral port is my asshole :-s

If you ticker was in bad shape you would probably be in the cardiac ward in WELLY hospital. :naughty:

It just shows you were working very hard.

I was talking to PT today about that and he was saying that by taking the heart rate up that high just increases that lactic acid build up. It won't do any harm to you though :nod:

It's a conspiracy theory to make you worry mate.

Have you considered that the POLAR Monitor could be in bad shape :) ?

It depends on what you consider high intensity. The fitter you are the more intensity you can handle at a certain heart .rate. It is a bit vague to say some unfit people have low heart rates. What intensity are these people training at? I presume you mean that some overweight people have low heart rates. This is possible as the fatties might have been doing more cardio than the skinnies and be fitter.

If they have lower heart rates at a very high intensity then they are not unfit.

The fitter you are the more oxygen you can utilize at a given intensity.

You can also measure your fitness by seeing how fast your heart rate drops when exercise ceases and the fitter you are the faster it drops.
