This is the new show for the year on the NZFBB calendar 1 week after the Nationals in Hamilton and the first qualifier for the 2010 NZFBB Nats!

The venue is the Wanganui Collegiate school Auditorium a world class auditorium and I guarantee will be appreciated and enjoyed by supporters, staff, spectators and competitors alike!

We are VERY excited about bringing the show to Wanganui. It is the 1st show to be held here for over 20 years. The last one was the NZ Nationals which was held at the Wanganui Opera House.

If you want to know more about the show please contact Rod Bannister on 021 929 225 who is assisting Terry Hills with the show!

Cheers - Rod

Here is a detailed document with all the info for the show:

(Please note that this event is a qualifier for BOTH the 2009 AND 2010 NZFBB NZ Nationals!)

What happens for those in the novice class, do they qualify as Novice for both years, or Novice one year and open the next, or can they qualify this year- and not compete until next years Nationals....as a novice?

Very good question(s), Mike! This is how I feel it should be handled (to be confirmed by the Exec):

Despite the Wanganui event now being before the 2009 Nationals, we need to retain the opportunity for competitors to use this as their first 2010 Nationals qualifier. We also need to be lenient in this unusual situation and allow people to qualify for BOTH events, not just one or the other. OK, here are some scenarios in regards to a Novice competitor:

1. Novice competitor places 1st, 2nd or 3rd at Wanganui and doesn't compete at 2009 Nationals: no issue - they can stay a Novice and have secured their qualification to compete as a Novice at 2010 Nationals (assuming they don't do an Open class in between).

2. Novice competitor places 2nd or 3rd at Wanganui, competes at 2009 Nationals but does not win National title: as above - they still have not won a class, so can stay a Novice if they choose to.

3. Novice competitor wins class at Wanganui and competes at 2009 Nationals: as they lose their Novice status post-Nationals, they would need to re-qualify in a non-Novice class (Open, Masters, Classic etc) to compete at 2010 Nationals.

I think this is fair - obviously it is an odd situation making this a dual qualifier, but I feel it is making the best of having to swap Nationals and River City Classic event dates.

Just four days to go until the final qualifier for the 2009 NZFBB NZ Nationals (and the first for the 2010 Nationals)!

It was great to see such a large number of competitors at the CNI show last weekend, and indications are we will have another big show this Saturday (not 80 competitors like the CNI's, but hopefully 50+).

Due to a smaller than usual group of helpers backstage, we will be allowing most competitors to take one helper with them backstage. I say "most" only because we don't want to be overcrowded backstage.

If anyone on this site is keen to volunteer to be a full-time tanner for Saturday, please pm me - particularly females as we only have male tanners at the moment!

Results now available on http://www.nzfbb.org.nz/?p=83.

It was a smaller than expected turnout, but there was some amazing quality amonst the 32 competitors that turned out yesterday.

The highlights were:

* the Mens 70-80kg class with Karl Cook edging out Supry Sos, then going on to win the Overall title.

* Kaye O'Neill returning to the competitive stage after a 10 year break and comfortable winning the Women's Physique Overall title. Kaye organised and guest posed at last week's CNI champs, and brought her impressive physique (extra amazing at 48 years of age!) to Wanganui and showed why she is a past Pan Pacific, Oceania and NZ overall champion - and she also finished 12th at the IFBB Women's World Champs 10 years ago.

* some impressive first timers in the Novice physique (men and women) classes and Novice figure.

* the Men's Classic class where Chris Nel triumphed over Boris Shamraev and Gino Di Leva - Chris also winning the Best Posing Routine (Male) award.

* the Senior Figure with Maria Dunlop beating North Island Overall Champ Paula Signal, and also picking up the Best Posing Routine (Female) award.

* Kris Burrell, who won her Novice Figure class and then triumphed over Maria to win the Overall Figure title.

There were some significant technical hitches during the afternoon, which left me MCing the first half of the night show with no microphone (I needed a large red wine at the break to save my voice!) and only 1/3 of the speakers were working. Despite not starting until 5.30pm in an attempt to rectify the speaker problems (to no avail), we managed to get through at a good pace and the show was all over by 8pm.

There was a nice vibe in the audience and the competitors all seemed to enjoy themselves. It was great to bring an event to Wanganui for the first time in 20 years. Hopefully we can repeat this event next year, although it is more likely to be in 2011.

A special thanks to the great team of helpers, and to my co-organiser Rod Bannister who did a sterling job co-ordinating sponsorship and promoting the event locally.
