Eggs as a source of protein

Progress

Recommended Posts

Do you buy freerange or cage-laid eggs?

Do you keep them in the fridge?

How many eggs do you go through each week?

Just curious, as they seem a pretty decent source of protein which I'm thinking I should eat more of.

Guess I'll start...

I generally buy 1 dozen freerange a week, and keep them in the fridge... but planning on buying trays of cage-laid eggs instead, because they're half the price per egg.

Also apparently they're better off not being stored in the fridge?

I buy free range and keep them in the cupboard as I buy so many of them I can't fit them in the fridge, I figure they aren't in the fridge at the supermarket so you don't have to keep them in the fridge? Plus they cook quicker at room temperauture. Free range are more expensive, but I do prefer them they just are nicer tasting IMO. I eat about 36 eggs a week  I haven't added it up before!!!

Yeah I agree, I think freerange taste much better too. And chooks are better off of course.

But the dam cost difference is whats getting me at the moment. Stupid empty bank account. :shifty:

Not sure why I'm still refrigerating them eh. Kind of clicked ages ago that they don't need to be... and some things I read just now actually pointed to them lasting better withOUT refrigeration. Doh. From now on...

Yeh I know I only started not refrigerating them recently when I was running outta room, you might get a longer shelf life out of them in the fridge but I eat them so quick it doesn't really matter. They do cost like x3 times as much as the battery eggs which does suck! TFB buys eggs whites in 2 litre containers which sound interesting as you can freeze them I keep meaning to look into that.

I use to go thru 105 eggs a week when I wuldnt eat the yolks but now only 35 az I eat whole eggs not just the whites

Although that seems a lot of eggs & protein, there is only 4g protein to an egg white, so it amounts to about 60g of protein ED at a cost of just under $25 PW. You can easily get the same amount of protein from 2 protein shakes in trim milk, so its quite an expensive option.

I used to go thru a 36-egg tray per week, but making all those omelettes was a complete PITA, separating out whites/ yolks, all the shells, etc. Didn't refrigerate them tho...worked better for omelettes and pavs. Saved the yolks, gave them to my sister in law who runs a cafe, got free Xmas pies in exchange.

Egg whites aren't particularly cheap, regardless of how you buy them, but they're a good alternative to the usual beef/chicken/tuna and whey/casein shakes. Plus, now the health gurus have changed their mind, a few yolks won't hurt (til they change it back again!)

I go through 70 eggs a week. I have been advised to eat the whole thing while bulking, was wasting so many yolks before  . Caged works out way more economical and dont really notice the difference in flavour.

Yeah dont refridgerate them either, just back of pantry is fine for me

I already have 3 shakes a day so 2 more would be a hell no I need some food lol but yea 15 a day 10 whites in the morning and 5 at nite

I think the "how many yolks are too many" debate is a tricky one... until recently it seems that they've been recommending no more than 3 per WEEK, but have since relaxed that considerably....

Should I eat eggs?

It was thought you should eat no more than 3 eggs a week. There is now no general restriction on the number of eggs most people can eat a week - as long as you keep your saturated fat intake down and eat a healthy balanced diet. However some people may still not be able to eat quite as many as they would like to.

How you cook your eggs will make a difference - eggs are best cooked with as little as possible fat added. Poached, boiled or cooked on a non-stick fry pan are the best ways to eat an egg.

(above is from National Heart Foundation FAQ)

But I don't think its really as simple as that for bodybuilders... I don't imagine they had 100 eggs per week in mind when they put that info out...

My guess, and it is a total guess, is that eggs are not nearly as bad for health/cholesterol as "they" thought previously, and something like a dozen, 2 dozen would be acceptable, as long as exercise and nutrition is involved in your life, but that once you go far beyond that week in, week out, it might be a different story?

Does anyone here get their cholesterol tested, and eat truckloads of eggs? Would be interested to hear some real world bodybuilder egg health results :)

Back when I was doing nutrition If someone came to me with high LDL and/or low HDL first thing I would change in there diet was breakfast, 3 soft poached eggs on rice and rye bread or sauteed spinach if on low carb, within 5-6 weeks every single one of them (many dozens over a couple of years) would come back to me with there bloods showing drasticly improved lipid profiles.

Ah good info Dr Jackal. So they'd be having 21 eggs a week right? Or would they still be eating eggs at other meals as well do you know?

Most would just have the 3 eggs per day, though some of the lifters I advised would eat alot more and there lipids improved just as drasticly if not more so.
