What is the one best supplement for muscle growth

Personally I don't count meat, potatoes or oats as supplements to build muscle. That's food. There's not much use supplementing your diet with either protein or creatine if you're diet is wrong so your macronutrient intake is the first thing to get right.

Creatine Monohydrate would be the most effective natural supplement you can use for enhancing muscle development in conjunction with regular training, good diet and adequate recovery.

Order of importance would be Training, Diet, Recovery, Protein Supps, Creatine. Get those five right and you almost don't need anything else.

Thanks guys, I'm currently using a product that is 50:50 Protein and carbs which seems OK, probably need to take it more often tho. Usually just take it after a workout.

Think I need to get the food thing sorted to grow more

Havent used creatine for a few years, may need to try it again, I used NFS Kre Alkalyn because didnt need to load etc, it that stuff OK?

Try five or six small meals spaced out during the day. And protein with each meal.

Any creatine is better than no creatine. But in terms of getting the most value for your money a cheap micronised creatine monohydrate powder works for me.

From personal experience, I swear by Kre-Alkalyn. No loading phase is great, and your body only cycles off it if you go more than a few days between buying your next lot.

Expensive yes, but so much easier taking two pills morning and night than loading.

Right now I'm on Cee-Pro, but the stuff tastes foul, but apparently its a good supp. Have been on and off it so haven't noticed any problems.

I know a guy who takes above average doses (as prescribed on the bottle) regularly. Is that safe? Eg 3 Kre-Alkalyn morning, 3 Kre-Alkalyn night (recc is 2 morn, 2 night).

I read somewhere that it was best to take it 30 mins before workout and then again straight after workout, but as you say the bottle says 2 morning and 2 at night. Does anyone else know what is best?

Yes it should be. There's not a huge amount of Creatine in Krealkalyn hence why you don't get the water retention. You'd need at least 6 caps a day for most guys to get results similar to normal old creatine monohydrate. The only negative effect might be from the ongoing alkalysing of the stomach acids caused by the special "buffering" ingredient added to the creatine monohydrate (which might, or might not be, sodium bicarb).

I have to admit that i'm pretty biased when it comes to creatine.

I always take cellmass. I have taken pretty much every creatine product on the market in NZ and i reckon it's the best one out there by a mile.

I usually take double the recommended daily dose and sometimes triple it.

I find that with any creatine based product that you can usually easily double the specified dose as long as you drink plenty of water during the day and while training.

Kre Alkalyn is ok, i have tried a few that i rated, but if you want a creatine product that is going to recover you faster then smash back some cellmass. Even the dirty old monohydrates you can get from the supermarket are ok as long as you drink 5 litres of water a day and limit your salt and sugar intake while using them..

Why would you limit salt and sugar while on creatine mono?

Flex, I thought you were saying the other day that Cellmass has hardly any creatine in it? I stack it with a Creatine Mono now :D

Yeah - Cellmass seems to be more glutamine, beta alanine and electrolytes than creatine so I certainly would't compare it to pure creatine and wouldn't technically compare it with proper creatine based formulas like celltech, sizeOn, phosphagen hp etc . It should work well with a bit of creatine mono.

yeah thats pretty much spot on. I like cellmass because of how quickly i recover while using it. If i was still in my twenties i would probably use a more dedicated creatine based product like size on or if money was tight just the cheapest supermarket brand i could find.

Anything with a decent amino acid/creatine blend should help with strength gains, but the older i get the more i try and focus on recovery.

The reason i mentioned the salt and sugar intake, is because excessive consumption of either can cause bad water retention ( more than what you would normally expect ) if taking a monohydrate and not taking in enough fluid.

There is a lot of stuff available these days and what works for someone may not work as well for someone else. So it's a matter of trying out different things so figure out what suits you best without having to spend a fortune :)

Reckon you are best to supp with pure grade creatine monohydrate as a stand alone supplement than use a packaged creatine. Then you can get a better hold on the dosing which should be around 15-20g ED as its generally regarded that muscle can only absorb & use 5g per kg so more than that is a waste. Pure grade is around 98% & my belief is that the less taste the better the quality. Bad taste = bad quality.

  • 4 weeks later...
Have found it never dissolves in water, just a method of getting it down.

Know a guy that pops a teaspoon full straight into his mouth then takes a gulp of water to swallow it.

Thats what I've started doing, teasoon full and a drink of water, much easier :)

I buy creatine separately too so I can control the dose and take it when I want rather than with a protein shake.

I’ll buy Creapure next time and move away from the cheap Horelys and EAS made in China stuff.

I'd bet the base creatine will also come straight out of China regardless of brand (in one of those cardboard drums you see in all manufacturing facilities).
