Chronic stomach disease + training diet help pls

queen

Recommended Posts

Been a while.. I have been pretty ill.

I have been diagnosed with a chronic stomach disease. It comes and goes as to severity and I can have days where I can eat normally and days where I can consume nothing without almost instantly been physically sick.

I have done research and am on various medications (which do not seem to help) basically my stomach is not digesting right. Research has told me to avoid any high fat foods and also anything high in fibre.

After several months of illness Im ready to return to the gym. Im just very concerned about my diet and how this disease will effect my training.

I previously had a standard diet of - brek: egg whites - protein shake - lunch: tuna and veg - protein shake - dinner plain chicken veg and brown rice. On powerlifting days I would also include extra oatmeal before training.

I am hoping there is someone here who can either offer some nutritional advice or who has a similar ailment.. Im just on my last day of antibiotics for another infection and plan to start this week just doing some cardio to get used to been back at the gym daily.

Any help, tips, ideas would be much appreciated.

Queen.

Hey,

I'd be a little careful about getting nutritional advice from a forum when you've got a medical condition (hence I won't offer any :P ).

I would suggest you talk to a Dietitian that has a knowledge of your condition, and has an interest in Sports Nutrition (as your average "nutritionist" will have very little understanding of medical conditions). Might be a hard ask but in Chch you've got a good chance - maybe ring the local Academy of Sport or Sport & Exercise Science NZ and ask about providers.

Then I'd suggest you give the Dietitian your notes in advance, so he or she can be prepared to give you quality advice taking your condition into consideration.

That is good advice nate -- an issue is though that the doctors are useless. I am consistently complaining its not working so I get new pills but nothing seems to maike much of a difference. When I am having good days the meds have the lovely feature of making me feel unwell with side effects on bad days who knows what they are doing. It doesnt feel like much. I planned to head into the gym today so might ask around there too. I will check out your link. Thnx.

Nice to see you back Queen, sorry to hear the news.

Nate's advice is right on the money...I'd always encourage folks to try to get their clinicians to work "with" them - especially where diet can make or break the way meds are absorbed, or aggravate/alleviate the condition. Also never hesitate to seek a second opinion if you can...so many Kiwis take first advice as the only option and put up with the consequences.

Hey there, I have Crohns disease (not sure if this is what you have) but I used to go to Di Dale, she is the head of the Clinic of Natural Medicine on Victoria Street. She also works in conjunction with the personal trainers at Pro Fitness. She might be able to give you some advice :)

I have some friends with Chrohns disease. I have something called Gastroparesis. My parents are big on natural medicine they have been trying to convince me to see a homeopathist. I might give her a call though, thnx
