wicked photos man. did i miss the novice 80+ or was there just none in that class?

Thanks. There was only 1 novice mens class (the 70-80) and it had 2 in it.

curious to know how long the morning and night shows ran for? small on numbers, but a few impressive physiques for sure!!

The morning show included the routines - started at 11:45 I think & ran until about 1pm. The night show started about 5pm & ran until 8:30ish.

So, a short show but not a bad one :D

I have some video of a few routines that I need to figure out how to edit  Will see how they turn out & post em up if they're watchable.

It was a much smaller than expected show, but the overall quality of the line-up was excellent, everyone seemed to have a fun time and we made a small profit so I'm happy with the end result.

Yes, all 20 competitors got a medal (not a trophy! ) with one class of three and the others each having one or two competitors. The overall lineup's had good numbers, particularly the men with 6 competitors. Great to see Brian McFarlane back on stage, and winning the Overall Men's title. Big congratulations also to Paula Signal (Figure) and Sheryl Blade (Women's physique) who won the other overall titles - plus to all the competitors for supporting this event.

Mike Debenham was the star attraction, and wowed the crowd as he did in Auckland the previous week. Big Moe also got his shirt off for some posing on stage, and signed pictures for many keen spectators during the night show interval.

It was also a great opportunity for 11 local sponsors to get marketing exposure and enjoyment from this event, so that in itself makes the whole venture worthwhile - regardless of the competitor numbers.

As always I was indebted to the many staff who helped during the day. Regardless of how many competitors we get, there is still the same amount of work that goes into planning and setting up an event - although there is a little bit less work and time needed on the day with a small line-up.

We (NZFBB) will need to have a close look at the value of having shows in the first half of the year. Auckland will always get reasonable numbers, but other regions tend to struggle with events before July. I'm not keen on restricting the calendar to events to a small window of August to October only. But, while it is nice to have events early, if they are not well supported then we may have to move them closer to the "business end" of the season. Early shows will work well if there was a big event to qualify for in June or July, but most of our competitors focus on Nationals in October and a handful aim for World events in September to November. Perhaps we need to create an international event (e.g. for Pacific, Oceania and/or Asian affiliates) here and have a couple of qualifiers in April - June?

One thing I am very confident about - our shows in September leading up to Nationals will have big numbers!

Thanks Terry, Excellent post. I can remember years ago when we used to have pan pacific champs mid year, those ideas are great.

The show may have been small but it was however a great atmosphere. Even though early shows generally do have smaller competitor numbers other factors may have contributed to the lower numbers as well such as, the bitterly cold winter we have had, its hard enough to say warm anyway when dieting, the amount of sickness around at the moment, not to mention when dieting the bugs seem easier to catch. Also alot of people have alot less money in there pockets and struggle with the extra cost of contest prep. Who knows?

having said that I will always support this show, and it is because of Terry that I do, He is an amazing event organiser. Thanks also to all the helpers,as well as Mike and Moe. :D

Okay, I managed to get the first video edited. Mike D's guest posing routine from the night show.

The camera work wasn't great, it was my 1st time using video :pfft:

If you view it on the YouTube site, you should get the HQ option.

If you want to download the HD version (720P):

150MB

I will post a couple more videos once I have them edited.

Great photography and videography, autechre! I did notice a couple of people very busy with their cameras during the pre-judging - I guess one of those was you?

You might be interested in helping me with a wee issue I have with the Wellington Champs on Sept 19. Keith Jolly is away that weekend, and he has a colleague who can do the photography but not necessarily the video. Maybe you might be available to do one or both jobs for that show? Mike Debenham mentioned he has the same issue with his event in Christchurch the previous week - unless he has recently found a solution.

Thanks MT. Yep, that would have been me. I was right up the front trying to dodge the judges heads

I may have to get back to you on this. I'm due to fly off to the UK the next day for a holiday, so wouldn't be able to get the photos & video out for a month.

I should be able to cover this show though if required.

No one has really talked to much about the show. So here goes.

As you all know it was a small show due to it being a mid year event with just over 20 competitors. Despite it being a small show it was great fun and very well organised. Thanks to Terry and everyone who helped.

I would also like to make a special mention to Bevan and Rachel from Waiweight Private Gym in Masterton. They were the main sponsors for the event but not only did they sponsor they helped with stacking chairs, putting the wallcoverings up, organise pump up weights and opening their doors for the athletes for weigh in the night before. Its not often you get people who are really this commited to the sport of bodybuilding and have a genuine passion for the people as well.

Of course we had 2 pro bodybuilders at the show with Moe and Mike D there. And just to add the final cherry on the cake Jonah Lomu himself attented both the morning and the night show.

So all in all one of the smallest but as a competitor one of the most fun competitions of the year. Even back stage everyone was friendly and we all had great fun.

Thanks to all

Thanks very much for those comments, Melbot - I'm pleased you enjoyed the show. Hopefully it proved that even a small show can be fun and rewarding.

You are also spot on regarding Bevan and Rach - they are always so giving with their time and energy and are also very kind and humble people.

I'm looking at holding the Masterton event a bit later next year - perhaps mid August. This will hopefully encourage a bigger turnout of competitors, but not make it too close to the Wellington regional event which will be sometime in September - depending on when Nationals is being held.

Thanks Both Melbot and Mastertell, Rach and I really appreciate the kind words. we will always do what ever we can to help support Bodybuilding especially the Masterton show as it is our local event and much easier for us to put in some extra hard work to contribute to it's success.

Thanks again. we really are thankfull to have so many competitors and helpers that show a true passion for the sport.
