Dietry Supplements. How useful are they really?

Over the last few years I have trialed many supplements(vitamins, fishoil, herbs etc) and most of them have had zero effects in spite of the many benefits their distributors claim they have.

Maybe many supplements do have benefits, but are just grossly under dosed. For example, the RDA for vitamin c for men is 90 mg,I dont feel anything at all from 90mg, but if I bump the dose up to 5-15 grams a day,the effects/benefits are undeniable.

I have taken the entire bottle of some supplements in one day and didn't feel a thing.I cant help but feel like I've been ripped off when this happens.

But there are a few supplements I take everyday,which have definite benefits in high doses,vitamin c,fishoil,ginseng(standardized 80%Ginsenosides),vit B complex,5-htp.

I know not all drugs/supplements/foods have the same effects on everyone.

I just want to know others experiences with dietry supplements.

Are you expecting to get high on the vitamin C or something?

LOL

I was wondering myself what kind of buzz you'd get from Vit C. I think I'd get a sore throat from swallowing them all first.

If you're after a good Vitamin to O.D on or get an effect that is apparant do it with Vitamin B3 (niacin or nicotinamide). I've taken 6 x50mg of these years ago as a pre-workout boost and I ended up sitting still for 2 hours feeling sunburnt and uncomfortable, no workout.

In 'normal' doses it opens up the veins and gives a good look when you're body fat level is low, also assists smokers whose blood flow is slightly restricted.

But in short ... yeah I can tell the difference between certain supplements at certain times.

There are catches with supplements.

If you're already 'topped' up or you take the same stuff all the time you'll not notice much at all if anything.

Taking N.O month after month is one of those that seems to wears off, and taking Tribulus when you're not run-down or working hard anyway you might not get an effect.

There are some that seem 'useless' too. 5-HTP worked on me for 4 days I had the best sleep and woke up crystal clear, then nothing for the rest of the bottle, so i still don't know if the 4 days were Placebo-related or what happened.

I make the habit of changing my supps just as I change my workouts. I do creatine for a month, then grab an NO, then a Beat Alanine, and so on.

I use to smoke,to a degree, vit c would alleviate some of the damage from the significant amount of oxidative stress smoking causes.I credit it for my lungs still being in good condition after smoking for 2 years.Only reason I gave up is becauses to expensive.

Most DietAry Supplements including Vitamins are only going to be of benefit if you are deficient or have a low dietary intake or high demand for something. Fish oils and other fatty acids really will be of most benefit on a longterm basis, you'd really need to be using most things regularly for a good three months to start getting full benefit.

You'd have to be a fool to use a whole bottle of something in one day and think it was going to provide benefit (except maybe an explosive system purge). It sounds like you expect something magical to happen as soon as you swallow something. Sorry that only happens with Class A Vitamin "E" not OTC Vitamin C.

Unless you're a corpse the RDA is bullshit so don't bother following any of that.

A friend of mine knows a chinese nutristionist/herbalist who said you shouldnt take vitamins which have a strong smell to them because they can cause damage to the body over a long period of time from being to strong or something. She gets her supplements from an american company i think its called manuku or something, they dont have that strong smell to them

Thank you!!

Supraphysiological doses of OTC vitamins is not going to do much other than give you expensive urine!!

LMAO

Better dodge the B vitamins then!! Or just stick with ones in gel caps - maybe now you can't smell the B vitamins it'll be okay to use them!!!! :pfft:

Ferrograd iron works for me as I don't eat red meat and without it become very apathetic and tired. As well I use flax seed oil in protein shakes and a Multi Vitamin tablet. Glucosamine for my knee joints as well.

Yeah I use Ferrograd (I get clinically low iron in blood tests).

Also use a multi as a coverall for the few days I don't eat as well as I should. The only other supps I use continually are Fish Oils & Whey, while from time to time I use Joint Formula, creatine, glutamine.

Good discussion on nutrition from PLers view point on http://www.elitefts.com/documents/nutri ... dtable.htm

Most agree on the following supps - protein, multi, good oils.

Nate
