Hi, from a keen gym rat!

Hi there,

Just wanted to say hi to everyone. Been browsing through these forums for a while, getting tips primarily about nutrition. Been going to the gym for about a year now, doing just weight training. Wasn't too sure about weight training when I started, but got a personal trainer who really got me into it and got me enjoying it with the programs he writes me. So from that I decided to go the whole hog and review my lifestyle, change my nutrition and food intake, and can say I'm really enjoying it now.

Also, part of the reason why I've joined is I'm in search of a training partner to help spot me. Basically I'm starting to use weights which are much harder to use by myself, and with my gym membership up for renewal in March (I go to Lloyd Elsmore Leisure Centre in Pakuranga, Auckland), I figured it was an ideal time to find a partner. At the moment, I'm looking to join Revitalize Fitness in East Tamaki, which was recommended to me by my trainer (and is about 2 minutes walk from work), but I'm keen for any gym in South or East. So if anyone is interested or could give me pointers, would be much appreciated.

About myself, I'm also an avid rockclimber (I climb at Extreme Edge in Pamure, and outdoors when I get the chance). I love both rockclimbing and weight training, and go to each about 3 times a week (so training 6 times a week), so tend to hit the overtraining limit quite often. I know doing both is detrimental, since it slows my progress in gaining and improving my climbing skills. But its hard choosing one of the other, because they both have their benefits and I love doing both of them. Hence the reason why I've been doing a lot of research on nutrition, to help combat overtraining. I'm also a big tramper, and doing outdoorsy stuff. Oh and the important things, I'm 24, work in IT and am Chinese/Malaysian. I guess I'm trying to destroy the stereotype of Chinese IT Geeks, being small nerdy little characters.

Oh well enough about me, just want to say thanks to all the posters, for inadvertedly giving me useful information about everything :).

if your rockclimbing in panmure you could try the YMCA Lagoon, thats in panmure, or there is a new gym that opened up just from it near the hollywood car sellers, and it has opening specials going on at it at them moment. if you sign up at the Y for @ $2 more perweek you get access to all the Ys in NZ, like Glen Innes, Mt Albert, Ellerslie (which has air conditioning apparently)

the owner of revitalise is on this site-im sure he could give you a PM haha

cnt give you help on south gyms-never venture out that way myself :pfft:

Thanks for the tips, I've seen those gyms, but I live south and work in East Tamaki, so I'd rather join a gym closer by.

Didn't realise that this forum was so wide-reaching! I've still to check out Revitalise, but from what I hear its a good gym.

Thanks again though!

Hey mate, welcome.

My training partner and I did a climb at Extreme Edge in Panmure last year. We're both pretty tall, which we figure must be an advantage. It's good fun - must go back and do another one soon.

I remember we'd worked our way up to a particularly tricky climb, with an overhanging wall that you had to come up underneath. We both struggled, but eventually got to the top. We felt pretty damn proud of ourselves, especially when we saw a group of hot young girls watching us in admiration. We felt less proud when one of them (who wouldn't have reached our shoulders) then flew up the same climb in an easy 30 seconds.
