Fonterra's lower than expected milk prices should mean cheaper whey protein prices right?

You'd think so considering how much the prices went up.

But unfortunately there's a mountain or two of milk solids that was produced at the old higher prices so I don't think the end consumer is going to see much of a drop in whey protein prices anytime soon, if at all.

Chicken has been one of the first things to go for me lately, its just so damn expensive for the amount you get - which I find surprising since I thought it was one of the most widely available and easy to farm meats in the world?! So now its 2 cans of tuna a day....hopefully I dont die a long slow death with mercury poisoning!

I got a call on Monday from a south island milk solids company wanting to know if we wanted to build our own protein.

Not sure how valid the call was it was unsolicited but they quoted $16/kg WPC packaged and branded. We did discuss blends of WPC and WPI into 1-serve, 1kg and 5lb packaging, but not the costs.

I think the prices quoted are pretty good considering the farmers get $5/kg, the company collecting the solids doubles their money and gets $10/kg maybe, then this company that rang me must make $6/kg for their packaging and blending capabilities.

So I think the one reason the prices are still high even if the price has dropped is that there are 4 or more people in the chain that might take the extra profit and not drop their price.

The farmers must be gutted, dropped from $8/kg down to $5/kg and not seeing prices in the supermarket dropping, they'll be thinking they've been taken for a ride ... oh wait they have been!

Sounds genuine... many people on here buy bulk unbranded whey.

Be a little careful, Fonterra stuff (Alacen 450) is all good from experience, but I was told some of the South Isalnd guys tried a whey product from another supplier that didn't seem to agree with their digestive tracts!!!

Yea all the chicken prices have been around $15 a kg, an above, haven't seen the ol, $10 a kg chicken breast in a month or so. :(

Probably want to go to a processor & buy direct. Usually have to get 20-25kg lots though. In the good old days it was less than $10/kg for boneless skinless breasts if you bought in bulk, haven't checked it out for some time though.
