pregnancy and training

OK girls a serious question here. If a girl were trying to lose some body fat prior to trying to get pregnant, are weight loss pills safe? do they affect various levels of vitamins, i.e folic acid, calcium etc in the body? Also what sort of effect do weight loss pills have on conceiving? I am looking at such things as hydroxycut xenadrine, all of which are pratcially stimulant free.

Now on another note, clenbuterol. How does this affect women. although it is a non hormone based substance, that raises metabolism. I know it can harden heart cell walls, however once again what sort of effect does this have on an unborn fetus? Information and advice?

Hi,

My personal opinion is that it is best not to take anything before trying for a baby (except folic acid from a chemist). No one can tell you 100% that what you take will not harm an unborn fetus. Why risk it?

Before I had my two babies I stopped taking supplements and other extras about a year before trying to conceive so i could be as toxic free as possible. This might have been an excessive about of time to be 'clean' but it gave me peace of mind!

Has a doctor asked you to lose weight? If not why worry about it as there is plenty of time after having a baby to sort that out!!

Hi thanks for your experience By the way the way the info is for a friennd. She was told by the doc to drop some weight before trying. So she was thinking of supplementing . I thought as most thermos are natural they may not affect fertility.

what about green tea a clean diet and exercise ?

:ditto: Thermos are regarded as great for losing that last bit of weight for competition or if your diet is clean and you are doing weights and cardio. But as Luigi said, clean eating and exercise can't be beaten for losing weight! If the doctor thinks it's an issue with getting pregnant what does he recommend? Probably diet and exercise?

I wouldn't like to be taking any stimulants whilist trying to conceive.

For a women who's trying to get pregnant or is currently. There really isn't a lot that they can take, (supplement wise) thing's like iron, and folic acid are fine. There are also some formulations that are designed for pregnant women.

As for fat burners, ie. sports supplements. And any other type of herbal treatment, natural or not designed for weight loss. I don't advise it would be a good idea at all.

I work in a health store, so i see this all the time. And my answer is always, consult your doctor before on what you can use, before using any other supplements. - It's just not worth the risk.

How soon can an ectopic pregnancy be detected with a specialized sonogram?

Is waiting six weeks after the first day of your last period best, or is taking a risk to wait if there are already signs? I am barely at 30 days, but testing negative for pregnancy with pains in abdomen/ lower back. Doctor wants a sono of the pelvic area. I am waiting for my husband's insurance to kick in too.

IMO your friend should stay away from diet pills or thermos while trying to conceive. If she wants to lose some weight she could do something like the liver cleansing type diet and see a medical herbalist or similar to ensure hormone levels are balanced. Body fat has a huge impact on fertility as it can alter you hormonal balance and affect ovulation therefore lessening the ability to get pregnant. I did the above diet/herbs when trying to conceive one of my children...dropped 6 kgs and in 6 weeks was pregnant and that was after trying for a year to get pregnant. Just my two cents worth. :)

I agree with the comments above. Your friend should lose the weight by exercise and clean eating... if she is not currently active, get her walking for half an hour a day. She should be doing at least 2 resistance training sessions per week.

It took me 4 months of trying to get pregnant. I stopped ALL supplements, (replaced protein powder with a natural brand with no artificial hoo-ha in it.) and also gave up my darling cup of coffee in the morn.

I am a firm beleiver that you should eat and exercise as if you are already pregnant; clean food, plenty of h20, and exercise. Best to start off on the right foot!

Hi there

Probably better to get this looked into sooner rather than later. If you are concerned about ectopic pregnancy then get your GP or any midwife to order a blood test for HCG levels which will indicate if you are pregnant or not. Lower back/abdo pain doesn't always mean ectopic pregnancy but the HCG blood test will also show if there is more likelyhood of ectopic pregnancy as levels can be lower. They may also check other hormone levels too.You shouldn't have to pay for a scan if you are pregnant as 1st trimester is free at most places and they will tell you if you're pregnancy is uterine, viable or otherwise. This is my opinon only and always get medical advice if you are concerned about your health. Would also be advisable to have all this checked out before any strenuous exercise. Hope that helps :)

Hi all

Not to draw anything away from the original topic - it just seemed like the right title for my question

and everyone seems to be really informed....

Is there any form of work out or exercises that should be avoided if you are trying to conceive?

I ask cuz i never know when i'm going to have my period - so never know if i've missed it - been working on tracking it and i'm taking Clomid and metformin now - so i'd hate to be doing a work out that is countering all the meds i'm taking LOL

Any tips are welcome

Thanks

Hi Goddess78, there is some evidence to suggest that while on meds it's not a good idea to exercise? :? This is because the hyperstimulation of the ovaries from the Clomid/Metformin can increase them in size and exercise may cause torsion or twisting of the ovaries.. which can be very painful? I would check it out with your health practitioner. Surely light exercise, walking, swimming may be ok?? .Do you have PCOS?

Tracking your ovulation cycle is important if you have an irregular cycle. If not doing it already.... try checking cervical mucous changes, temp before you even get out of bed (rises sharply just prior to ovulation) and if you think you are ovulating do a urine test. If all the signs are indicating ovulation then you know what to do :pfft: Hope this helps :) Check out the link regarding the ovaries.
