Protein Powder

Recommended Posts

Hey, i came across this when i was having a browse through trademe, looks alright

Usually i pay $20 for a small container which lasts me like 3 weeks, but this is only $30 for a whole KG!!! i don't necceserally need any top of the line substance, just some powder that will give me my daily needed protein intake, but ofcourse there are a few cowboys out there that would go selling cheap powder that will give no protein or results what so ever, although this guy has alot of great feedback.

Have a look at the link and tell me what you think, should i buy it? anyone got any experiences with it perhaps?

dude as far as i have been able to figure out, the stuff he is selling is the unflavoured stuff from fonterra. put it this way if you go straight to fonterra you can get 20kg for $150 or so. I think those are the prices. their is another topic in this room that covers this a bit more :)

Dude i gotta tell ya it is most likely to be crap, low end whey concentrate ,for a start a top whey should have around 3-4 grms of carbs total per 100grms WITH flavouring, around 2-3 grms with out, also his sugar counts are high which means its lactose sugar base is high, which means low filtration processing, also it has 7 grms of fat when idealy it should be around 2grm(which deffinitly indicates poor quality) and his stat figures dont add up ,he has 97.2 grms of substance in 100grms ??? plus at that price it can only be cheap end concentrate as I have a indepth knowledge of Fonterras priceing structures. Note you look like you are of polynesian decent, avoid lactose as you have a very poor tollerance to the stuff and it makes you look puffy and fluidy !!

Any good Isolate or concetrate.

If your hardcore enough to not care about taste go for Balance.

Pharmasport is economical but Im lactose intolerant and doesnt suit me.

Leppin is good, but a wee bit pricey, sorta like Musashi or any american brand.

I prefer local brands .

Hunt around for special deals, thats the only way to save or befriend your local supplement dealer and theyll hook you up with discounts if your nice to them.

Fonterra is the NZ dairy company !!! They make all the whey protein in NZ, in fact there whey is classed as the best in the world , many companys overseas use Fonterra whey Ie EAS etc,( only 10% of there Whey production is sold in NZ, in fact local industrie usally misses out first if there is a short fall of whey avaible ) but there are many grades of Whey, so you should idealy look for a Cross Flow Micro Filtered Whey Concentrate( the highest grade in this class) or a Ion Exchange Whey, the best for ongoing day to day use would be the CFMFWC, as its profile is very simmilar to the Ion Exchange and cheaper in price!!It is also 99% lactose free, you can tell if the protein is of this quality through its mixablity , proteins of this grade should be insatised , ie liquifies with the adding of minimal water !! This comes via top filtration processes, thus elimating all but the protein of dairy , which is called whey (amino lactaldumin-lactogolbulin-glycomacropeptides-immunoglobulins).

Obviously these proteins are dearer in price than proteins of a poorer quality as the process to arive at this quality is much more involved, no different than any other consumer item really!! But in the long run they are a far better choice , golden rule of thumb when buying any thing , if it sounds to good to be true then it probibly is, well most of the time any how !!

Alright i think i've got what you mean :)

But see the thing is, i was working out HEAPS last year, and once i got to a point of a good physical muscular appearance, during the summer, i would hang out with my mates all day and wear a singlet and go to the gym for 5 - 10 minutes quickly doing a few shoulder and tricep exercises to pump me up a bit then my gym time got shorter and shorter and at the start of this year i stopped completely, as for the relavance in this thread, i don't know what i'm on about :P

But yeah, i dont need top of the line stuff, i've only just renewed my membership, and by just i mean like yesterday, i haven't worked out at all for over 6 months!! so yeah i don't need anything expensive just something that will give me my 30g of protein a day, i don't care about the added fat, i need to put on weight not lose it! cutting and cardio can always be done afterwards, so should i go buy the $30 a kg protein stuff or not? i have hardly any money atm cause i'm not working.....i'm off to the army in a month or so, so yeah i'm not a rich kid right now.

Ummmm tough one , maybe, but remember you will have no comeback if it is crap, but the stats look sort of ok for what you described, so it is probibly better than nothing !!!, and I would suggest you have 3 serves a day along with 3 soild meat meals, for protein requirements!! But remember what you have been told for future purchasing when you have a bit of dosh !!!

I dont see how you can go past the fonterra stuff mentioned above, if you work it out per kg its like 10 bucks or something, just get a mate whoes keen to go halves and split it up if you cant afford it all at once, your not going to get cheaper than that.

What are you guys on about :x

I'm not lactose intolerant, i have milk all the time.

lol.

The protein powder mentioned in this thread,

http://www.nzbb.co.nz/forum/viewtopic.php?t=491

is protein made by fonterra, if you click the attachment and look at it it will tell you more, although i think the link is for the isolate not the concentrate, so you can get it from davis trading for $195 + GST + freight for WPC, which worked out to be about $11 bucks a kg. Very cheap and not too shabby at all!

I dont see why this board doesnt get in on this, we all have huge protein intakes, why not do a big group buy and split it all up? Im sure Pseudonym could work out something interest permitting. Pseud?

Mmmmm.... I've been really careful to stay absolutely neutral, and not push any brand or product myself. I'm just concious that if I endorse something, somehow it's sort of "official", which means the board is endorsing it, which means we're no longer impartial.

However, I think it's a great idea, and I'm sure other members will be interested. If someone else organised it, I might even put my name down for a share.

Sounds cool, i'd be keen

Maybe if 4 members went half on the 20kgs....whats that $50 each and 5kgs each, sounds great...i'll be keen next time round, i'll buy the stuff off trademe and give that a go, then i'll be keen to go halves or quarters on the 20kg bags 8)

I've almost got my 20 posts accomplished

  • 3 months later...

Out of interest I called fonterra and then davis trading - WP isolate (ion exchange) is $410 approx per 20 kg. Whoever is selling what they maintain is isolate is either a moron or telling bs...I'd say the latter.

When i was Oz based i used to buy big sacks of WPC and yeah - it is hard to blend and does lead to bloat but it is ok as a cheap supplement for those of us who are financially challenged.
