Weight belt for squats, deadlifts - yes or no?

You hear all sorts about whether to or not. Ive heard stuff like your lower abs suffer under development lower back doesnt develop strength because of the added support. Il use my belt on days when you dont feel as centred with gravity as other days. In saying that i make a conscious effort to not use it so much in the last 3-4 months to see what the difference is.

I use one only for deadlifts/squats/heavy leg press ... hack squats etc

Only have it firm during the set - take it off immeadiately after set.

Only use it past a reasonable weight - last few sets

i.e anything over 4 plates a side where I'm standing - over 400kg on leg press.

I use my weight belt all the time when I training expect for when I am doing any core work or cardio.Plus having a weight belt on is good for when doing heavy squats or deadlifts.

This, in my opinion, is completely unnecessary. I'd only wear it when you feel you need it. Which for me is heavy stiff leggeds, squats and leg press.

Only use it when you feel it is needed. ie if you are a 1RM 180kg squater, you would prob be using it from 150kg up. if you have a day where you dont feel so comfortable id suggest al ighter day reather than a belt.

I only belt on heavy deads, squats, and only at 180kg plus. if i need to belt under this I would rather drop the weight.

gym rat loose the belt for everything that doesnt involve possible truck flextion. it wait of time and doesnt help proproception of the core. basicly the nerves and muscle around that area become lazy, and the risk is when you bend over at work or home to move a 20kg box, without your belt, that is when you are likly to urt yourself.

IMO a belt is used to prevent hernia. I thought it was a common mis conception that weight belts, although provide a little support for the back to reduce the chance of injury. otherwise i leave it at home. Some of the vets i have talked to have said that the use of the belt can reduce the strength of various mid section and stabilising muscle groups. personally i use the belt on heavy lifting days, squats, hack squats dead lifts etc.

I agree, however, It's part of his image, I fear it will stay.

ive got one of 'those' types at my gym to.

personaly i use one for working sets for squats and deadlifts as well, although sometimes need it for other exercises after deadlifts as my back is a bit niggly (herniated vertibra)

Yep, there was some good advice in there...I'd been holding off buying one on account of how my lifts were all so damn pissy it would have been "all the gear, no idea".... so until now folks don't know I've got no idea!

But, if I set the right goals for the year, I should end up with some respectable weights by Xmas. So, maybe I'll go look for one - any advice on better brands/ things to avoid?

Those weightlifting belts you see at Rebel sport etc. do nothing for my core stability. Get one of these (http://www.adastreet.com.au/content/cms ... ING_/2249/)

It will keep your back safe under the heavy weights. OB sells them if you're interested.
