2009 New Zealand IFBB Pro Cancelled?

January 6, 2009

"We hate to be all negative, and have zero proof nor confirmation of this - but is the 2009 New Zealand Pro cancelled? The show [both figure and bodybuilding] has been removed from the official contest calendar on the IFBB website. We have been hearing of numerous issues plaguing the organisation, but nothing official.

The show was scheduled to be held on March 15 - which is the day after the 2009 Australian Grand Prix. This in effect left under 24 hrs to travel from Melbourne, Australia to Auckland, New Zealand. The timing issue we had heard was causing issues of getting the pros in. Talk of paying expenses of the top 5 Arnold Classic Figure competitors was also bandied about - an estimated cost of approximately $10,000 AU - an amount that combined with the sanction, prize money and logistical fees, would most likely prove hard to expect a return on."

Word is that this has been confirmed by Tony Doherty sighting that there is only one plane from Melbourne to Auckland & this is not sufficient & enough time to allow Pros to get here. WTF. Cant the IFBB get its act together with its International Calendar.

If this is true it is a real shame but it has nothing to do with the NZFBB. Moe is a private promotor of the Pro and Elite Show, the main issue plaguing the NZFBB is that it finally has some $$ in the bank and some decisions on how this will be used to help our athletes need to be made. All organisations have issues

As for Moe if he has cancelled the show.....if a smart businessman (and pro Bodybuilding is a business) can see they are going to loose money going into a venture, they pull out before it does cost them. its a real shame but im sure if we were going to be loosing big $$ in running a show we would do the same. i know i would!!!

Dont get me wrong im pretty gutted to hear this but least it was done 3mth not 3 wks out.

You can't blame the IFBB for this, their International calendar is pretty much the same every year for their Pro shows.

New promoters such as Moe need to work around it, not visa-versa.

Surely you would check to see what flights are available before you went ahead and booked a date?

There is also a pretty hefty sanction fee to run an IFBB Pro show that needs to be paid up-front and well in advance.

It's not refundable if you cancel the show at the last minute.

Seems like a good excuse to go shopping in Melbourne that very same weekend of the Oz Grand Prix.

Seeing big guys on stage ripped and professional posing is def worth it.

Paul caught a viewing of Pricilla Queen of the Desert when he was over, thought some of the "hot chicks" had a bit of muscle though, and there werstrangely some pretty camp blokes in the audience   .

In Pauls defence, he works hard and doesn't get to watch many movies.

and Pros with signed contracts 6 weeks out get to split the sanction money too.

What has let down the New Zealand Pro Show is the promoter. The promoter needs to have a committee to go over the running and organising the event. This did not happen and I can not see it happing as he has done nothing to this day. I know there are people out there that will volunteer to make this work as it’s better to had a good team. I have seen this work in Melbourne and the USA . So Moe if you are reading this please give it a try and trust some real people that love bodybuilding we are out there.

As Moe is a private promotor, have you considered that he may have just crunched the numbers and worked out that it was just not going to be viable. LAst yrs event lost alot of money, and unless you get the sponsors on board the promotor is going to be digging in there own pocket to make up the short fall. It is Moes company that was going to takeon the profit/loss of this show, so in all honesty why should he have a committe of other peole telling him how to spend his money, i dont have a committe for my business.

I dont doubt there is plent of people who love bodybuilding out there that are willing to help. but i think we keep loosing sight of the fact that the bill to run this event is going to run into the tens of thousands if not clicking over One hunderd thousand. we can hardly give moe a hard time if he can see that he is not going to recoup this.

I agree with parts of this.

The promoter is to blame, but as bigmd says, he is a private promoter so how he runs his business is his concern.

What is of greater concern is that Moe is not instilling any confidence in competitors who may be considering doing any of his future shows.

If memory serves me correctly, this is not the first time that this has happened.

There is nothing worse than preparing for a show and finding out it has been cancelled.

Fortunately for you guys, Tony's Pro show is on again, so anyone who has prepared for the NZ Pro show can at least do the Aussie one the day before.
