yes i know that there is a forum for these questions, but it doesnt seems to be very active so im posting this here. Me and my flatties lease is up early Jan, just secured a new one in the balmoral/three kings area. Im currently at clm mt.welly, which is ok (no squat racks though  )

does anyone have any recommended gyms around this general area, with a decent weights area?? currently pay $23 a week plus locker..

Any suggestions?????

First up any 'gym' that doesn't have a squat rack is not in fact a gym, it's a health club!

Is $23 a week the going rate in Akld? You poor bastards! I pay $5, no join up fee, and have 4 squat racks, DBells to 65kg, cambered bars, safety squat bars, 2 olympic platforms, tyres, steel logs, kettlebells, GHR, chains & bands, as well as all the usual machines and cardio equipment.

All this and there is always at least 50 free parking spaces within 100 metres of the gym!!!!!

My suggestion is to leave Akld!!

Seriously tho I would look around and 'testdrive' a few gyms to see how BBer friendly they actually are.

oh also you are pretty close to environment gym in penrose, definately worth a look run by bbers so very cool... and they will give you a free week pass to try it out... auckland uni is tbh a really good gym.. lots of equipment etc... and very cheap... about $7 a week .. or if you are a student its only $235 a year.... sooooo cheap.

yea im definitly wanting a more bbing friendly gym, clm has awesome people, but is not aimed at people like me. a 'health club' is definitley more accurate.

my flatmates sister works in the uni gym, shes already offered me to have a free trial session, so i will def have a look. would have the bonus of uni chicks aswell...

i plan on doin the round trip on friday (only day off this week) to as many of the potential gyms around, and those suggested are definitley shortlisted.

What gym do you workout at nate? sounds awesome!!!

clm's nutritionist told me that for trying to bulk up, i shouldnt consume no more than 1.4g protein per kg, as it was pointless!! it wasnt till i took advice from this forum that my lifts and diet got sorted!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nutricianist - Whats her/his qualification? and where did she/he do clinical studies? If they are a clinical dietician 1.4g sounds right ..... they are conditioned for main stream clients and do not always challenge status quo.

Please don't crucify all Dietitians Optimass!

My wife is a NZ Registered Dietitian as well as registered Sports Nutritionist (NZ Sport & Exercise Science / NZ Academy of Sport provider). She certainly has many athletes well above 1.4 g / kg bw, dependent on their needs.

But in essence you're right, most clinical dietitians deal with other areas (pediatrics, renal, diabetes, weight loss, post surigal etc depending on what they specialise in), and will tend to be conservative in their approach.

My advice if you want to use a dietitian is to find the right one - find a provider for the Academy of Sport (or your local Super 14 franchise). I guess it's kinda like finding the right doctor - a GP may be of very little use if you really require the specialist knowledge of a Sports Physician (again try NZAS providers) or an Endocrinologist!! :D

No worries - was merely pointing out that it pays to ask the question before accepting advice. A clinically trained dietician has done the hard yards in my book, and is at the top end .... finding one with a sports focus is ideal .... I'm not sure there are many around though as studies are intense and clinical positions are not the easiest to come by in NZ ..... in any case, my point, the guy that manages the local protein shop is not always the best source of nutrition advice ....

Where is your wife based? there are probably a number of users on the forum that would benefit from a consult.
