5x5 question

About to start Bill Starr's 5x5 and have been reading alot on it. It seems others maybe confused about how things should go which is now making me confused..

The question is should all sets be ramped to the last set which is the working weight for that exercise?

I have seen people loading the bar with the working weight and performing 5 reps for 5 sets a that same weight.

Bill Starr's programme advises to ramp ie 60 , 65, 70, 75, 80. 80kg being the working weight for that day and exercise. Instead of 80, 80, 80, 80, 80.

Can anyone shed some light please?

That's jsut how Bill Starr's work, other versions of 5x5 do straight weight. If you're just starting out all you need is that one top set. If you've used up a lot of noob gains then you'll need some more volume to see some strength and size gains.

i tryed this for a couple of weeks once... didnt really like it.

but wat i did was do a couple of warm up sets (very light just to get blood moving 2 sets of 30 reps) then id jump straight onto the heavy stuff and crank them (same weight 5x5). its a hard method but u cant cheat yrself by going easy and best to do with sumone so they push ya and spot as i dnt think u can do it 'true' if its done by yrself with out spot.

anyone done this method? and wat did u think and wat was the duration of training like this b4 gains in strength and size slowed?

Yea I've done this before with a trainer, if I recall correctly it was a great help with strength gains. You don't leave the gym feeling quite as wrecked or with a crazy pump, but over the six weeks the weight you can move specks for itself. I agree that you'd need a spotter for this program. I'm probably going to do this program again when I start bulking.

Like what 2guns is saying, as a newbie you'll make massive strength gains very quickly. So it really doesnt matter what sort of program your using, as long as your stimulating muscle fibres enough for growth.

None the less, trying anything new is always fun, and hopefully leads to successfull gains ;)
