1. Later closing times-I mean, 9pm during the week? How shit is that? And they close at 8pm on a Friday!? Whats so special about a Friday? THey close even earlier on Sat and Sun-5:30pm!. It just sucks really. Especially as I pay $23 a week! (I know, I'm a mug!)

employees at gyms also have lives if u didnt know, u should manage your time better everyone else copes

the business also has to make money too, u knew tha hours of the gym before u signed the contract and agreed to the weekly payments....

I agree with 2 Guns in that the difficulty in having long opening hours is finding gym employees who are able/willing to work much later than 9 or 10 o'clock in the evening.

The 24 hour gym at Auckland Airport Oaks works because it is based so closely to a 24 hour shift based industry and thus has the numbers to support paying staff to work all through the night.

A few gyms have tried it and found it doesn't make good business sense to be open at times where you might get 0-5 people through the doors in a shift.

24 Gyms are usually the ones that have cornered and operate near a niche market(Airports and Hospitality).

Having worked in the Fitness Industry for a while now, I can also see why trainers are relectant to work those red eyed shifts. Most Fitness Instructors earn between 13 and 16 dollars per hour! which is a universally underpaid rate for people who have invested anywhere between 4 and 12 thousand plus dollars for their qualifications.

I think the hours mentioned (9pm Mon -Thurs, 8pm Friday and 5.30 Sat and Sun ) are pretty standard and unless you are working 15 hours per day Mon-Thurs, 14 per day Fri and 91/2 per day on the weekends most people should be able to find a way to train around those times. Where there is a will there is a way.

Remember: Guys and Girls all around the world are building great physiques with less resources and oportunities than we have here, you can complain about it or just get on with it, if you want it bad enough, you will find a way.

Les Mills is opening their new purpose built gym this year. ITs nearly $15 million worth of state of the art badboy equipment. Dont think there will be much doubt of its superiority, its just a matter of whether the atmosphere is your thing or not.

As for dropping weights, well they are only trying to avoid people falling through the floor of the 'retro-fitted office block'. And if the weights are so heavy that you have to drop them, perhaps you should consider getting someone to spot you... much safer than just letting go..

Les Mills plug and to top it off a stab at bodybuilders who may drop weights occasionally.

From what I have read about the new state of the art Les Mills that will be opening later on this year sounds very cool and from the photo what I have seen what the outside will look on the Les Mills web site looks very nice. I think I will have to check the new Les Mills the next time when I am in Christchurch.

I have trained in most gyms around Ch Ch since about 1990 when i 1st started training. id have to say as far as equipment room and Knowlege (accross both Profitness gyms) Pro is a good place to train. just remember that the gyms like pro and LM you may pay a little more but equipment gets fixed when it is broken the gyms are kept tidy and CLEAN so to a degree you pay for what you get. The heating/cooling at pro is a bit of a problem but any building as old as this one is going to have that issue (try working in it for 12hrs) and it lays alot with the land lord not just the Busines owner .

As for the old free trial, unfortunatly a thing of the past in a succeful comercal gym. id suggest if trying a new gym that you really are serious about joing say to a sales person, ill pay a casual today but if within a week i join can you take the casual fee of my joing fee. that way no one looses. As a customer just rember how much it would cost to run a big gym like Pro or LM. i use to own World Gym here in ChCh so i know and we were small fry.

It really come down to if you were power or Olympic lifter Gravity is your only option if you want to learn. Proven for BBing you have LM , Pro and Canterbury Fit. Not just because of the staff that are there but the members too. If you want to be succesful at anything suround your self with succesful like minded people.

yes mainly thanks to the CCC pumping Millions into the council gyms and then offering memberships at 50% of Market rates with the use of gym pools and spa pools it became unviable, i sold out in 2000 to Pro Fitness.

Our member who were purly price driven bolted pretty quickly to the CCC gyms mainly Pioneir.

Hey World Gym was a great party while it lasted. we had Ms universe , Multi Mr NZ's, Carmen cotter womens Pro, Dave Smith Mens Pro, I was Mr NZ at the time too it was a very cool gym. if i win lotto i will re open another World Gym LOL.

At the Nationals one yr we took out the Novice under 70 70 to 80 over 80kg titles.

and the following yr the open under 70 70 to 80 and 80 to 90 as well as overall,

we also had once 30 supported travel to Auck all with Black world T shirts the same as the athletes was good as we took up about 3 rows at Auck girls.

Good times

Damn, it would be great to have that kind of community going in Christchurch again.. Rather than bb'ers scattered all over the show and only coming together on these boards..

They are still here, just scattered around the town a bit. Fortunately in BBing, as you get older you can get bigger. Watch this space
