Aside from our obvious geographical isolation, as a country we have a very solid identity. Why would we ever need to merge with Australia?

Not as outrageous as it sounds. When Australia federated in 1901 it was only because NZ was kicking the Aussie states' arses economically that NZers didn't want to join them. I'm not saying NZ will merge as part of Oz, but agreements such as CER (close economic relations) and others that allow citizens to live and work in the other country freely, and then there's the talk of a trans tasman currency. Europe is going through something similar with the EU, the EU charter laws override local laws. Not saying we'll be saying feesh n cheeps, but we might have a lot more in common with them by then.
