whens the best time for protein bars?

Bars are a practical way to make sure you don't deviate too far from the plan if you get caught out.

I prescribe Carbless bars to clients as an alternative snack meal. They are good for keeping variety in what can be a boring plan and are a good thing to keep in the glove box or your gym bag as a fall back incase you are out and around and don't have a chicken breast on hand.

Morning tea - pre/training imo best times.

protein bars - as a treat, Powercrunch (delish wafer type with predominantly whey unlike the others out there) 205 cals.

shakes are better for sure.

too much crap like sugars and soy, wheat etc.... in bars, some do taste good though, but better than reaching for a mars bar or something bad

What? Power Crunch bars are shit. They should be called fat bars not protein bars. They have between 11-12g of fat and only 13-15g of protein - with 195-205 cals per bar and 99-108 cals from fat they are at least 50% fat by cals, and it's all from dirty old palm oil and palm kernel oil.

Nutrition companies that bring out this kind of crapola should be shut down.

flex is only on this website to prove people wrong

You're wrong again I'm afraid. Can't you get anything right?

But no, in fact you're probably right for once. However do you want me to say "I agree" like alot of people on this website when I read something I agree with? I can't be arsed with that.

I'd rather point out something that's incorrect, clarify information in someone else's post, or highlight some of the misconceptions people have about supposedly good nutritional products.

I prefer not to make comments about things I don't know much about ie. the gear, I can't be fecked with sledging people, nor do I want to try and hoare off my wares, all of which is what most of this site seems to revolve around these days, so my postings aren't as frequent as some other users. However when something comes up that I think I know something about I'll stick my nose in.

Personally I can't see how a 50% fat hydrolyzed protein wafer cookie bar is a treat - for me a treat is a chocolate brownie and a short black.

I'm with Flex on this one. If you're going to treat yourself, do it properly. No protein bar is as good as a chocolate brownie.

Every so often I forget this and get the protein bar. It inevitably leaves me dissatisfied, so I then need a brownie as well to make up for the disappointment. :P

I agree with Flex, protein bars are a scam. Most have low protein content and high fat. They call them protein bars to make you feel comfortable about eating them. The main reason I dont like them is that the last time I had one it was so hard and sticky it pulled a filling out and cost me $200 to fix. The other reason is that they taste so good that once I get a taste I can't stop eating them.

The only time they are handy is when travelling to stick in hand luggage

I have a protein bar in my bag, destined to be eaten on the way home from work.

It's not one anyone sells in NZ, made by ON:

Protein = 20gm

Carbs = 19gm

Sugars = 0gm

Sugar Alcohol = 18gm

Total Fat = 2.5gm

Saturated Fat = 1.5gm

Trans Fat = 0gm

Cholesterol = 5mg

Sodium = 200mg

180 calories

Seems to match the same profile of the food I consume now except it's way more tasty, got 2 boxes (FudgeTruffle and Mint) about 6 months ago and I might have 1 bar every 2 weeks at most.

Can't be any worse than the Hells Pizza I had 2 days ago and the BurgerKing I'm having tonight LOL. If you're missing out on protein bars just because the ingredients aren't to your measured liking I'd sure like to see how clean people eat day in and day out, must be super clean.

Having said that I acknowledge that due to my unprepared morning I didn't think I had enough meat for the whole day until I got back from work. And since I'm having a BK dinner there'll be a large gap between quality protein meals, hence why I chose a protein bar.

I could have done a shake but i will take a shake with me to antenatal classes and have midway through at 8pm so didn't want to have so many shakes in a day.

There's no problem with people eating protein bars as long as they realise that they are high protein (often denatured crap protein), candy bars, and that you'd be better off eating a decent wholefood meal or having a protein shake. If you really don't have time for either of the latter then a protein bar might be better than nothing or better than a pie from the petrol station.

Unfortunately there's so much misinformation about them, especially the supposed low carb bars, and way too many nutritionists/PT's seem to prescribe them as something that's good for their clients. I eat them myself, but I'm not fooling myself that I'm going to get to 5% bodyfat or grow slabs of muscle if I make them a regular occurrence.

I think Goran from ON Nutrition brings them in being the NZ ON agent and all http://www.onnutrition.co.nz/index.php?pr=Protein_Bars
