How big is a scoop?

Silly question some may say but how big is a scoop? I've read in several blogs that some people are getting 50g of protein from a double scoop. Now firstly what stuff are you using coz I want some.

And for my main point how big are your scoops? I'm using Balance Ultra-Ripped at the moment and if I use two scoops I only get 17g of protein. Not to mention that 2 scoops is only 22ish grams which poses the very confusing physical problem of how does 22g=50g? When I went to school that was generally considered to be impossible.

So after all my enjoyable ramble can anyone shed some light on the matter?

No doubt our resident Protein Powder Queen/Guru, Ms Laura, will have the complete answer here  but I have had a similar query some years back. As I recall it is something to do with "density" of the powder. So not all powders are the same, and hence a weight to weight or scoop to scoop comparison is misleading. So you must measure according to the scoop size included in the can of protein.

what the heck? that doesnt sound right. most of my protein powders have 20-24g protein per scoop. the scoop its about 35g-40g. The scoop varies depending on what powder you have. I recommend going to bodybuilding.com and browsing the varying powders, you can see how much protein per scoop etc they all have.

Balance Ultra ripped has Protein per Serving: 25.6g. Where are you getting 17g of protein from?? 2 scoops would give you over 50g.

Is everyone getting confused with scoops and servings here?

A double-serve protein shake has two servings in it, it doesn't give away how many scoops that is. If the serving is a single scoop then it's two scoops, if a serving is two scoops then it's 4 scoops.

What a funny word 'scoops' when you say it often enough in a single sentence .. scoops

scoops

Most of the NZ made protein powders use the same silly little scoop which is about 10-15g so you normally need 2-3 scoops per 30g serve. In the US they have bigger sized scoops - around 28-32g, so you normally only need 1 scoop per 30g serve. To get 50g protein in Balance you'll probably need to use 5 or 6 scoops.

As mentioned, scoop size varies.

You need to be wary of level scoops vs. heaped scoops too.

E.g. pharmasports say to use 2 heaped scoops, but you'd need to keep a mountain of powder on the heap if you wanted to get the 30g serving from two scoops. Three level scoops is a better measure.

You can test it by measuring the weight of powder in a scoop on your kitchen scales.

Lmao...you shouldnt have left...

I know, it was a mistake. Unfortunately I have to go and study mechatronics engineering and become a BMW certified technician. I'm almost 20 so maybe ill get a bit smarter as time goes on :D

As someone who has worked in the supp industry and spent hours measuring out protein powder to see if it fits in to a certain scoop size (sooo painful  ...) I personally wouldnt trust the label to be 100% correct. Especially because of what people have been saying about the density of the powders, settling and some people taking maybe bigger scoops or it getting air pockets in it or whatever.

So...IMHO first time you ever get a new powdered product I would suggest weighing out the scoop sizes on how you would do it and check that its about right so from then on you can make sure your getting the right amount.

Maybe a hassle and I guess how neurotic you are about calories etc.

I've known people to complain that their container said 50 servings and they only got 49  Who actually counts??!! People with too much time on their hands.

Has this happened to anyone?

:):)
