Spirulina - Skeletal Muscle Recovery

Do you take Spirulina? There are many studies that suggest spirulina is very beneficial to the human body, also relating to bodybuilding, can increase recovery time of skeletal muscle cells. Another benefit of spirulina is its natural bio-availability to the body, as opposed to many other multi-mineral/antioxidant supplements that many of ingredients are not absorbed by the body as they are synthetically made. i.e. - Vitamin C, is readily made in laboratories.

Here's one interesting study done on the effects of spirulina on skeletal muscle recovery,

The effects of spirulina supplementation on preventing skeletal muscle damage on untrained human beings were examined. Sixteen students volunteered to take Spirulina platensis in addition to their normal diet for 3-weeks. Blood samples were taken after finishing the Bruce incremental treadmill exercise before and after treatment. The results showed that plasma concentrations of malondialdehyde (MDA) were significantly decreased after supplementation with spirulina (P < 0.05). The activity of blood superoxide dismutase (SOD) was significantly raised after supplementation with spirulina or soy protein (P < 0.05). Both of the blood glutathione peroxidaes (GPx) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) levels were significantly different between spirulina and soy protein supplementation by an ANCOVA analysis (P < 0.05). In addition, the lactate (LA) concentration was higher and the time to exhaustion (TE) was significantly extended in the spirulina trail (P < 0.05). These results suggest that ingestion of S. platensis showed preventive effect of the skeletal muscle damage and that probably led to postponement of the time of exhaustion during the all-out exercise.

If Spirulina does work to reduce skeletal muscle damage how will you get the skeletal muscle to grow?

The results don't suggest that imho.

The result was increased time to exhaustion only and that's a good thing :-)

The other results were raised levels of whatever in the blood and no more than that I can't see any tie-in with lowered muscle damage unless there is a study with results showing those raised levels do lower muscle damage of course.

They made a a fundamental leap over to confirming their hypothesis from the blood tests and have added the word probably which confirms that they think it might work.

Spirulina probably does or probably doesn't are both legitimate outcomes I'd concur there.
