Someone mentioned they thought Streetview was done with rotating camera ontop of a car. Yup thats how they do it, they've got loads of cars in NZ with the google logo on the side, which have a big chunk of electronics on the roof, including a 360deg camera. They just cruise down every street with it.

I read on a blog about this guy here in chch spotting a google maps car back at the start of 2008, and he followed it in his car for ages and he mentioned some streets he went down.

So then when I heard streetview had been launched finally, I was checking it out, and I happened to check out some of those streets he mentioned, and I noticed a white toyota following the google car around in all the street view images within about 5 blocks down several different streets lol. He told me it was indeed him. Slo-mo car chase, immortalized...
