Schwarzenegger to End Ties to Magazines

It's interesting... Arnie's fighting an uphill battle anyway as a Republican in a mostly liberal state. (At least, I think California's swings to the left-wing, doesn't it? Most of the coastal states seem to...)

Perhaps Californians voted for his fame, without checking whether his political values matched their own?

California has always been a democrat stronghold, but the previous governor had plunged the state into something like $25 US Billion debt. Arnie got in basically on the back of the opponent's apalling performance. He started off well, but the road was a lot harder to hoe than he imagined. At the end of the day, like bodybuilding he will be judged on his results.

There's a new book out on him that covers his political career. It sounds like he introduced a lot of good things and tried to get things moving, but found a little bit too much resistance from the entrenched oldies for some of his more extreme measures. I think he also discovered that the state was in a much worse position than he had anticipated and so couldn't really do a lot to sort it out in just a few years.

Unless politicians can

a) start a war

b) stop a war

c) lower taxes

they are always going to struggle for popularity if things don't go quite to plan.

He also hasn't done himself any favours by being so upfront about his life and some of his ideals but in some ways that's good because no one can get too much dirt on him if he ever does run for president.

I can already hear the final line of his speech if/when he gets voted out:

"I'll be back"

Arnie for President.....

Did you guys notice how many millions he gets paid for writing for both the aforementioned magazines for a period of 5 years ? Damn thats a fair bit of $$ for writing about his arm workouts on every other issue

And of course he doesn't really write them. And the workouts suck anyway.

I think his "values" probably do match their own - i.e. that to aggrandize and enrich oneself at the expense of others is good. They may however disagree with some of the specific policies to advance these values, such as support for the barbarian hordes currently sacking the Middle East.

But most likely the problem is the one alluded to above. Californians entered into the childish fantasy that a screen hero like Arnold could somehow miraculously save the day and magically reverse their inexorable slide into sub-third world status, just like in his movies. Now the reality that they are screwed no matter what is beginning to sink in and they don't like it.
