Kettlebells

Hi Guys,

I have been training with intensity with Hypertrophy for a few months now and have seen decent gains teamed up with a solid clean diet and creatine, however, I'm thinking of dropping the traditional iron and splashing out on some kettlebells for a different training experience.

Anyone had any experience or advice lifting with the 'bells?

Kettlebells are a "complementary" source of resistance.

If you are looking for pure hypertrophy, stick with iron.

If you need something to complement your gpp training like Nate said, or want flexiblity for martial arts, or sport or whatever, go with kettlebells.

Hi

If you are just after building muscle then traditional bodybuilding is the way to go. However, if you are after more functional strength, have limited time or perhaps want more of a fighters physique then kettlebells are great as the train the whole body as one and can definitely put on some muscle if correct nutrition is used.

I do however believe that kettlebells offer bodybuilders some advantages such as

  • They hit the muscles differently than with a lot of bodybuilding movements ie, training movements rather than muslces

  • If you are doing fast lifts like, swings, snatches etc they hit the fast twitch muscle fibers which are neglected with slow controlled bodybuilding movements and these fibers can be quite conducive to muscle growth ie, think sprinters and power athletes.

  • You can perform power type cardio movements such as swing and snatch intervals that are great for burning body fat and conditioning negating the need for a lot of boring cardio ... a lot of research is promoting higher intensity training for fat loss now and not long slow cardio

  • Kettlebells help maintain & develop flexibility and as you are training a lot of muscles together helping prevent muscle imbalances and injuries

On a personal note, my shoulders really thickened up from kettlebell training, more than when doing bodybuilding and I think it was to do with high volume snatches, turkish get ups and walking overhead holds not even presses. I think shoulders tend to like fast movements, which is why swimmers have big shoulders I suppose.
