Free range or battery hen ?

Apart from the ethics of keeping a bird locked in a tiny cage, feeding it antibiotics not to mention other stuff, and kept awake for 20 odd hours a day under artificial lighting is there any difference in the quality and the protein ?

I usually only buy a half dozen free range a week, but if I up my intake it's going to cost me a lot for the free range ones.

I'm assuming you're talking about buying them from a supermarket? I get mine in a tray of 30, from my local fruit & vege place. That's quite a bit cheaper, I think, and the yolks are a much better colour. But I don't know whether they're officially free-range or not. They're jumbo-size, though, which is always good! :D

content of the fat, omega-6, and omega-2 (battery hen is omega 6 because of the corn they are fed etc) also, i can guarantee you as with every other type of food, that there is stuff in there not yet found, that is extremely! good for you coming from free range, the quality etc of battery eggs im guessing wouldnt be too flash because the chickens are forced to mass produce eggs (consuming vitamins etc from themselves) and are only getting fed that grain in return (my guess is its very low quality grain, bang for you buck as they say.), whereas chicken in a natural environment eating what it wants.

just ranting, my 2 cents :P

I go through about 40 - 50 eggs a week. Cant afford free range, Just buy size 6 or 7 packs of 30 from Pak n Save.

Yes would like to buy free range ideally but sadly I have to decide whether the hen or me needs a future.

I'll keep an eye out for a farm who sells road side free range, I have seen one some where a while back but I can't think where at the moment.

I suppose I'm being a bit selective considering I buy chicken pieces that come from the 8 week force fed chicken sheds

PERSONALLY I STAY AWAY FROM PEANUTS WHEN i'M CUTTING, I JUST FEEL THAT THEY ARE TOO FATTY FOR ME, RATHER HIGH IN CARBS TOO.

I GET MY OMEGAS FROM SALMON AND CLA SUPPS THAT WAY I CAN COUNT THE CALS A BIT EASIER. AS FAR AS I KNOW TUNA IS PRETTY LEAN IN FATS.

Whats a good source of omega 3's ... tuna, peanut butter, almonds ?

educate me on fats im a bit naive here.

The best sources of omega-3 are flaxseed oil, canola oil, pumpkin seeds, walnuts and fresh oily fish, such as mackerel.

Of these sources of omega-3, by far the best is flaxseed oil.

All sorts of other weird and wonderful nutritional stuff here as well ------
