bench- 100kg=1 to 4 reps

military( behind the neck)- 60kgs=6-8reps

barbell curls- 50kgs=4-6reps

squats(deep)100kg=8-10reps

2 and a half months later

bench - 140kg - 4reps

military(behind the neck)80kgs=6reps

barbell curls-65kgs=4reps

squats(deep)140=8reps

i never use to do squats because of my height(6.2)people at the gym who are my height don't squat so i followed the pack...thought its time for a change to that mentality

I hear ya pimp.

Jono is going to be ashamed of me but I never squat. Mostly because it feels really awkward squatting at 6'3'' as my balance is bad so bad I don't trust myself without a spotter. Going to start them now tho as I have a new training partner.

My short term goal is to break 90kg, and current long term is to hit 100 and have a good level of fitness.

i think squatting is awkward for all ppl when they 1st start. just use light weight and get used to it over time.

imo height is a poor excuse. its just an easy way to say oh.... yeah i dont wanna do squats they are too hard to do.

take that  .. nah seriously i think all ppl can squat.. just start out with the bar if you have 2

edit: btw it took me at least a year to get my form down solid. this isnt somthing you can learn in just a couple weeks

I think at 6'3 you would get more benefit from other exercises such as leg press & hacks.

Squatting isn't for everyone & especially taller people don't seem to always get the same results as us midgets under 6'.

arnold squated at 6'2

ive seen lots of tall ppl squat

It's not just balance that's required for squats/deadlifts... You need to be pretty flexible too.

If your Achilles' tendon is too tight, it prevents your knees going far enough forward to keep the weight over your feet. You can't keep your back upright, as your centre of gravity would pull you over backwards. So you have to lean forward, until you basically end up doing good mornings, and putting huge pressure on your lower back. It's a problem.

Make sense? Probably not. I'll draw a picture! :D

I'm sure you have seen a lot of tall people squat, but what I'm saying is that it isn't for everyone. Some teller people don't seem to get the same results. I'm not sure if it's a flexibility thing or what but the back always seems to take more strain with taller folk.

well my personal view is if they work on it instead of giveing up after a small time eg 6 mnths then they could get some descent results

When you guys are talking about "TALL" people what exactly are you referring to?

In some countries 'tall' can mean 5'7" while in others it can be 6'5".

Furthermore are you referring to tall guys that lack suffcient LBM (skinny) or guys that have a significant amount of LBM for their height (bulky)?

Disregarding an exercise because it feels awkward is comical. Especially since that exercise has proved to be one of the best multi-joint (compound) exercises to produce muscular hypertrophy.

When I started olympic weightlifting about 5 years ago, the first thing I learned was squat. From the start it obviously felt awkward as many of you say, in things like bar placement, feet placement, making sure that your back is flat, ect. Basically all the technical aspects of squatting. (Motor Skill Learning). Through correct practice and practice alone technical aspects of ANY exercise will improve. Right now squatting feels like second nature because I know what the movement requires and because I have LEARNED how to do it. Everytime I get under the bar I know where to place it in relation to my traps, keeping head up, feet positioning and all that jazz.

And you all should know that you don't add weight to the bar (at least at the start) until you have successfully learned technical aspects of the exercise you're performing. You're asking for an injury otherwise.

Spend time and learn the techniques they will bring you better gains in the long run. Sure, you can do leg press/deadlift or wank yourself to death with leg extension machine for all I care but you're limiting yourself in the long run in terms of hypertrophy and adaptations to go along with squatting.
