Today I went to check out what a women's gym was actually like.

First stop - Configure in New Market. Get the tour by a helpful worker - 95% cardio machines, and a "circuit" of weights. Thats it. So she sits me down and I'm like, Uh, I have to ask, is there a squat rack? And shes like, oh no, this is a womens gym, we should have one but the owner refuses to buy one. Im like...... riiiiiiiiight-o then.

Seriously what the hell, what kind of gym doesn't have a squat rack? Not to mention they wanted some extreeeeeme price for membership. Hmmm. I think I am just gonna buy a squat rack and complete my home gym, no more of this bs poncy gym crap..

hehe you should have known went it states "womens gym" it would be lacking in large weights and most importantly squat racks. I went to the one here in Wellington years ago with my mate just to do cardio with her to keep her motivated, she did go from a size 14 to size 10 with configure however still soft and skinny. Yep and thats all they were doing cardio and very badly there with womens mags under their noses

I manage a Configure Express. And yes the circuit style isn't for everyone - it's certainly not for me. It is actually a very good place for women who find gyms and gym equipment scary - and yes there are a lot of women who do feel this way. If a woman is happy to squat a weight heavy enough it requires a squat rack then she should be mixing it up with the men anyway.

i think most womens gyms are crap as far as a real gym goes, they are geared towards women who want the feel good factor with out to much hard work and are marketed towards women who think gyms are full of guys who are gonna watch them constantly, most women after a couple of weeks in a regular gym are totally comfortable.Just takes alittle time for them to realize its not the big deal they thought it was.

its all about the marketing.

My mum goes to one and just absolutely refuses to listen to me about it...

I understand that the average demographic that visits these gyms dont need a squat rack.

But the instructors there are absolute bullshit, at least the one my mum goes to.

They make them do circuits, and there is no progression in weights or duration or intensity of ex !? ... it just makes no f#$g sense... Im not trying to say teach them to deadlift and bench but ffs at least teach them the foundations and how to progress on the machines...

sitting on the bike and reading a mag 30mins x 3 a week aint going to do sweet f#$k all apart from earn revenue for the owner of the gym.

these places annoy me.
