excellent post sports guru, that's why it's important not to push through the pain.

it's better to strengthen those muscles, work on posture and make sure flexibility and stretching is given utmost importance.and get orthitics if you can afford it.

I cant take credit for my last post as it was put together buy another client with great credentials. (both first hand and threw medical training/practic) thanks very much

I've heard good things about hot cold treatments for muscle recovery...

apparently the heat pushes the blood outwards into the muscles, and then the cold pulls the blood back inwards. Gets blood going through your muscles a lot more - unsure what its effects would be here though.

elaborate please

To be honest thats about all I know in terms of what it physically does. I know how to do it if you wanted to know that?

well there are different ways of doing it depending on what facilities you have available. I know some top rugby places have them but not too many other places. Bascially they have two specific 'baths' that basically have contain two very different temperatures; one reasonably hot and one real cold. After a game you hop in one pool for 30-45seconds and then hop straight into the next pool for 30-45seconds. Repeat 5-10 times.

Obviously most people don't have access to these but there are other ways of simulating the effects - using two buckets, in the shower and changing the temperatures etc.

I had shin splints. It was ruining any cardio stuff I did. I went to the padietrist (this is who you need to see, it's their specialty) after spending a small fortune on orthodontics molded for my own feet I have never had a problem since.

I had previously tried all the resting, better shoes, physio and insoles but they didn't work.

See a padietrist!

Sweet. How much to see one? I rested my legs for a month and the pain went away, but I tried a game of football the other day and they came back. A real bastard!!!!!

I've heard that there are a couple of shoe shops in wellington that do 'cushions' (sorta like insoles I guess) which retail for around $40 that are specifically for tackling problems like shin splints.

Yeh my physio place has them. I'll get some when I can afford some new running shoes.

The padietrist cost about $80 for the diagnosis (took her about 20 minutes to know what was wrong and how to fix it), then about $600!!! for the orthodontics (insoles for my shoes)with the follow up visits. She took a plaster mold of my feet to make them fit me perfictly. I still have the mold if I ever need replacements. They also had a cheaper version thats not custom made but it was still hundreds of dollars (can't remeber exact cost)

I'd at least go for one visit as they can tell you why you are getting them, it may be a different reason from mine.ut

It was expensive but money well spent as I can work out as hard as I like now.

I tied thes but they didn'tork for me. Also went to shoe clinic in wgtn and spent $265 on shoes after doing their test, didn't help either.

Oh really? I've decided to forget football for this year and just work on my fitness, going easy on my legs etc.

ok so i have been alright for the past few weeks, then last week i forget to carry my arch supports to play, bam!!! next day big time shin splints lasted me for a week,so anyways i think i have found out what has helped and wanted to share it with you folks.this is definitely my cure

arch supports sole from shoe science or something cost 50 bucks

skins compression socks cost about 80$ from rebel sports

heaps of stretching before playing

I noticed that when im playing after sometime there is a pain in my arch but no pain in my shins, the pain in my arch is negligible and goes away after playing.the next day usually it's my calves and my shin muscles that hurt a bit but not my shins, which leads me to believe all the pressure that was on my shins due to a low arch gets evenly transferred onto my leg muscles where you want them to be,the soles are soft and negates the jarring quite a bit,the skins keep the legs warm and the blood flowing which keeps the muscles loose and the arch support of the soles provides support to the muscles and tendons running all the way from the periosteum of the tibia to the arch and under.

thanks for advice!

I haven't heard particularly good things about those skins though - bit overatted? Just from a couple in the sport and fitness business told me that they are ok for a while but they stretch (as most material does) and then don't do anything after that. Seems logical...thoughts?

although they might not play a major factor as much as the arch supports, they do keep the leg muscles warm which in turn keep the calves loose ,which kinda helps with notion that shin splints are known to be caused by tight calf muscles which effect the dorsiflexion of the foot as far as they claims of improving circulation i really cant comment on them.but i think the arch supports are absolutely necessary if you are flat footed

so i went to one today,he said my calves were ridiculously tight , and gave me some stretching excerscises for my calf .,improve my balance (he said my feet are are tight mess) ,told me to try it for 3 months and improve my lower leg strength and then come back and hell get me an orthotic.
