I have the really bad in only my left side,

Inner tibia on a real precise 1inch part, sore as f*ck, less than ideal for rugby, I have the scans for bone density next week to check for stress fractures,

For me nothing helped too much, I get my ankle strapped in a certain way to support the arch for games and that helps, but I dont do any running other than trainings and games, it comes and goes alot I find, sometimes walking is sore.

For me they think it was caused from gaining 16kg in about 9-10months but I should know more after my scans,

They seem to be less sore after I have destroyed my calves in the gym too :S

My biggest mistake and ill be the first to admit it,I didnt give my calves much attention in the gym that has changed to the point that it has now become an obsession to have big calves right now and i can skip any other boody part but calves now..

the main cause of shin splints and weakness (at least for me) i have found out is the tibialis anterior,I got these nike resistance bands for like 15$ and what i just hook the handles under a door and the rope around my foot and just do some dorsi flexion (foot towards shin) every second day till it fatigues, and i stand on the wobble board the gym (one leg at a time),has helped me heaps,I haven't had shin splints for quite some time now.

another thing i do is duck walking(just walk on your heels till the tibialis is fatigued)

I was going to buy orthotics next year, but by next year i might not have the issue any more, ill keep you guys posted.

give it a shot it works.

I have suffered badly from shin splints over the last 8 years. A big problem for me was bulking up in the gym - I went from 78kgs to 108kgs in about 3 years and it seems my shins never caught up. I grew up running and have done it most of my life (and I love it) - but can now only seldom run because of shin splints. Things that have helped in the past was physio and acupuncture (which I swear by). Took a few weeks to help the chronic pain I got - I also saw a podiatrist (foot specialist) and have changed shoes - so I always get the correct shoes now. But in saying this, I do still get shin splints - but I accept this as being a side effect of me being too heavy for my shins (I have very decent calf muscles and upper leg muscles). People suggest rest as an option... I find rest does help, but as soon as I start running again, shin splints come back. My only other option is surgery - specialist has suggested this as I have one of the more serious types of shin splints which is called compression syndrome - which can only be cured with surgery...

Think you mean Compartment Syndrome - it was explained very well a few pages back.
