Should be a good comp.

Who will lift the heaviest total.

Big comp lifters Rich Patterson (pb 324), Mark Spooner (pb 293) and ExpensiveUrine (pb 318) will make their presence felt. Richie and Mark are both lifting up a weight class, so will look to add more to their pbs.

EU has been training good and looks to be set to break the International Standard of 323kg for the 105kg class. Rumour has it that Marea Teoki (represent Kiribati at the Comm Games) has been training well at Counties Manukau and has done 140kg snatch and 175kg c&j at 109kg BW. He's listed to compete at under 105kg.

Also, you can't rule out BigMac (Jono) who can clean 190kg on a good day and with a pb snatch of 130kg. Who knows what can happen.

So who will lift the heaviest total IMO ?

Richie and Mark have been in a 're-building' phaser after their Olympic campaign. So may look to just post totals, but who knows. With a good warm up under their belts, these guys are so experienced that they could open up a can of whoop ass on the day.

Marea will have to drop BW, so he can come under the 105kg mark. And if he hasn't done it properly it can greatly affect his performance. But if he has cut properly expect fireworks from the friendly islander.

BigMac is one strong dude there's no doubting that. But I think his snatch will be too far behind to peg back leading snatchers in the c&j. But if he can snatch 140kgish (which I know he can do), he'll be a massive threat.

ExpensiveUrine will be the favourite here IMO. He's a big comp lifter with great determination. I saw EU easily snatch 140kg in training 3 weeks ago and that was after 2 very heavy loading weeks! So he'll be fizzing now and will just need to keep the nerves in check. But I got my money on him.

Should be a good comp to watch. If you're not doing anything on the 25th of October, pop down to the Millennium for a watch.

Good luck to all competitors

Good luck all - lets see a 200 c&j Bigmac!!

Yo Danomyte are you lifting bro? You been keeping a low profile on both platforms (Powerlifting and Oly lifting) the last couple years.

Hey T, great to hear from you. No, not lifting

I been having a bad run with one injury - 1st rib double stress fracture  Effin sucks!!!!!!!!!!

I last competed in April this year OL and went to the Oceania Weightlifting Institue in New Caledonia for training and picked up a double stress fracture in my first rib under the clavicle (note: weird injury that mostly occurs in rowers and throwers).

So it's been 6 months and the damn bugger hasn't healed properly. I feel fine and it doesn't hurt, but the specialist said if I lift it could end my lifting career  He's the expert so I've been on the sidelines for a while.

Man, missing all the comps (OL and PL) has made me sad but hungry though. I miss catching up with the other lifters and seeing legends like yourself lift big weights. It really hypes me up seeing guys like you (bench), Derek Pomana (squat), Nick Hansen (dlift), Richie Patterson (c&j) and Stas (snatch) lift. Man I wanna lift now

Can't wait to get back to training, prolly be in Dec (fingers crossed for a good CT Scan)

Sucks being injured!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hope u are well T.

Ahhhh D...that would explain it then bro, just take it easy my friend and let the body recover. Any injury is a bummer and rest and rehab can take time (sometimes too much for our liking). Ive got national bench down in Dunedin next week. Not too sure how I will go bro, I too have been under an injury cloud and parts of my body (left AC joint/left tricep) still havent recovered from my motorcycle accident in January....muddafrekbrikscmick. I got the hard word from my doctor that after this meet I must lay off the bench for 3 months at least.

Hey bro, lets catch up sometime...probably wont be for a train but at least we could have a yarn over a smoothy and some salad  . I'll give you a yell next time Im up in the big smoke.

Stay strong bro

Hey Dan, thanks for the kind words, no pressure! :D It's very unfortunate that you're not gonna lift, hope you heal up soon brotha.

Having looked at competitors' start-list, it looks like Mark S (Olympian, 69kg class) and BigMac (superheavy, 105+kg class) won't be lifting. I believe Mark is going overseas and Jono is still rehabing his shoulder injury/focusing on NZStrongestMan later this year. Having said that, Andy B (77kg class) will pose a thread to Richie P (Olympian, 85kg class) in the snatch in my opinion, as he reportedly did 130 in training recently (I have seen him do 127.5kg) and Richie is in recovery mode from Beijing (done a shaky 125/160 today, the end of heavy week). Another competitor that will impact the competition in 77kg class is Caleb S, having done 117.5/150 this past week in training so it'll be a very close competition where every lift will count!

Will also be good to see the weightlifting crew from Wellington. Haven't seen Phil S(105+kg class) and Lee A (85kg class) lift in years. With Tevita's (105+) injured shoulder, who knows who the winner might be in the superheavies and lift the most weight of the day.

EU is right, I pulled out due to shoulder problems and NZSM. Nationals got moved back about 3 weeks, putting it right near NZSM. I got my snatch up over 130kg, but it was hit and miss whether my shoulder would be able to hold 140kg in the wider grip. I know some people were looking forward to me going for a 185-190kg+ clean in an attempt to win, but I decided to focuss on the strongman and the Auckland highland games/strongman the week after. That $1000+ is on the table for 1st at NZSM helps a bit too. :P

Tonka, I take it you're not going to do Powerhouse open then bro? Or maybe you can join me in the token bench club and just do the raw squat and DL?

Will definitely be down BM but whether I lift is another thing. I have done no squat or deadlift training since North Islands (June), probably still got time to do a short build up but might have to lidten to what my good doc has advised me.

My challenge however still stands to those lifting. I might make some changes to it though and allow knee wraps but will let the crew know before the PH Open.

Was hoping to be at the NZSM too but I cant now. I will be up in Auckland but for a wedding. Keep upthe training BM, your chances of taking the big prize are definitely on.

Stay strong

 IThanks. I should probably get round to booking my stay down there. Waiting to hear from Weaver, he's a bit injured it seems. Will be good whatever happens. I'll have to fly out about 7pm on the Sat though, so Friday night will have to be the big feed if this happens.

I'm ramping up the training and looking forward to NZSM. Still have alot of weaknesses, but I'm confident.
