hope you guys can help me :D

hi guys i am new to this forum and also new to body building. i am still a student so yea, not looking to be superman, just have nice arms and chest :P

i was hoping to ask a few of you experts which is better: protein or whey? and what are the differences? advantages (and disadvantages if any)

also what are the recommended brands out there? i see a lot or different companies producing protein powder so i am a little lost.

its great to see this as a nz based forum because we would be talking about the same products, and im sure a lot of you have plenty of insight in this matter.

cheers guys

i think you need to do some research........

whey is a form of protein that is is easily used by the body, hence its inclusion in protein powders.

yeah it all depends on your goal.

if you don't wanna be superman, then you may not even need a powder - just eat other protein sources. you gotta think about whats important.

for me, the most important thing is to not have artificial sweetner in my body so it limits me to only a couple of brands.

some people are all about flavour - and will pick brands that are like a candy shop, some people can't stand a lumpy mix - so will focus on mixability. some are looking for the latest and greatest, biggest gains you've ever experienced type of stuff - this is all relative to your training and what powder you believe has given you the best gains - and that involves trial and error or mind over matter. some people focus on price, and will only choose a protein they can afford.

some people look for powders without lactose or low lactose, some have extra digestive aids. I bought a protein that some 'expert' told me would be the schizzle and 2 weeks before my comp I broke out in massive pimples all down my arms and bloated like a crazy seahorse - had to throw away the whole tub. I had another brand which I stuck to for a couple of years and then one day it started making me shit acid - so i had to get rid of that one.

If you simply want nice arms and chest, just keep lifting, eating clean and good portion sizes for you, monitoring body fat levels and sticking to it for as long as it takes.

I use Red 8 Just Whey Plus. mixes well, cost effective, not artificially sweetened, digests well and seems to be an all round basic.

thanks for your comments and thught guys :D

at the moment i use aussie bodies. not sure if thats any good lol.

my main question atm is do you just look at the nutritional information?

im looking to buy a pure whey powder that has 81 g of protein every 100g compared to the one i have right now which only gives 42g of protein every 100g.

the way i see it is: the higher the protein the more effective it is? am i correct?

also does adding additional flavouring to your mix alter the results? e.g decrease muscle gain?

thanks again

flavouring shouldnt matter

sounds like you have a mass gainer protein which is why its a low 42g probably has around 40g carbs as well right?

but therer all good if you have trouble putting size on, main thing is to make sure your gettin 30-40 g protein out of it no matter what kind your using.

yes it is high in carbs ! but i then had a look at the optimum nutrition which everyone is talking about, and it has about 25 g protein and 5g carbs? how come it is the best selling protien in the world when it has low amounts of carbs AND proteins? i dont understand :(

because it is not a mass gainer protien it does not contain the extra carbs,

the op nutritin would be 25G per 30g serve, or similar,

I've moved from buying Red 8 at Health 2000 to buying Eat Me whey protein direct from the manufacturer in Wellington - saves me heaps! A 30g serve is 82% protein (25g) - same as Optimum Nutrition. Awesome price, $80 for 2kg and it's free freight. I eat a lot of fresh fish too. :D
