Setting up a forum

A question for Pseudonym: How difficult is it to set up a forum like this and how much does it cost? I'm looking at the possibility of setting one up myself, and it would be interesting to hear from someone who has already done it.

Well, I'm counting on the fact that while the basic forum software is relatively easy to install, to be any good it requires lots of update patches and modifications, and lots of customisation. And time. Did I mention time?

From what I am told, setting up a forum is easy. I've toyed with the idea but if it gets popular, you can kiss your time goodbye.

Most forum software is a pain to maintain and as the forum grows, you end up having to migrate to bigger and faster servers and different hosting companies, often paying with your own cash. Then there are the flame wars and the spammers and the hackers

Forums seem to become a 2nd (unpaid) job for some admins but usually they remain a labour of love, which theoretically makes it all worth it.

There seem to be some supposedly good free services operation. Do you know anything about these? I think trolls and spammers would be reasonably easy to deal with, despite the fact that most moderators seem incapable of doing so.

What the others have said is pretty much correct, you do need alot of time to get it all running, and then theres the time to iron out all the glithes, time to keep it maintained, time to do future alterations.

TIME.

What will be the topic or theme for your forum cornfed?

Hard to explain really. The basic idea is that so-called civilized society over the past 6000 years has been an aberrational cultural freak show which is intrinsically unsustainable and about to collapse. The discussion will center around finding ways to transcend the mentality of sheeple-populated slave society, drop out and become free, survive the coming dieoff and so on. I'll link to it if and when it gets up and running if you like, but it's not really of general interest.

well of course collapse is inevitable. I had an interesting debate over placing the cause on western society and Christianity the other day. I managed to argue that Christianity can't be to blame due a christian doctrine never being truely adopted. and that if it had civilisation would be sustainable, as natural resource would be taken more care of. it was interesting anyway. I reckon give us 10 more years, and keep bush in the number 1 seat and we'll be over in no time. /still have to look on the bright side of life don't you :D

Cornfed - please let us know when you get the forum up and running. It sounds very interesting.

BTW - if you don't want to initially go the whole hog and set up a forum, there is always the YahooGroups mailing list service. It's not as flash but can work quite well.
