Stupid question

palms facing use straps when i first started deadlifting i used an alternate grip u are stronger but i noticed it developed one side of back more than the other

And over developes the opposite front delt.

It has also been known to tear the bicep of the hand/palm facing away at about 3 + times body weight.

Mix it up I say.. use an alternate grip till your pretty good at it..

then spread your arms out and use a snatch grip, adds a bit of emphasis on your quads now.. like oly lifters...

Not a fan of double overhand with palms facing inwards... makes the bar feel like its going to slip on to me.

What grip do you recommend OB? I have always used an overhead grip but have recently tried an alternate grip. I've found it has helped my form.

Like SS and others have said, the standard what they call the powergrip is the better option. There is no turning unrolling teamfatboy of the bar as long as they are not badly bent already.

The Hook grip is probaqbly the best grip it is an advanced version of the overhand. The Oly boys Big mac and EU are brought up on this grip. The overhand is not as strong as the Powergrip

I have just started using this grip but I am about 2 years away from using it in a comp, little bit less if I harden up.

This is from Some Resolutions For The Gym on our website

(I resolve to give the hook grip a second shot for dead lifts and not squeal like a small child because it hurts.)

The hook grip gives an extra 10+ kilos maybe more, if you can master this grip early then go for it.

OK, now I for one am much better informed :)

When I get lured to the dark side I'll have a lot of work to do on my grip, all I knew that having both hands the same way I ran out of grip strength unless I alternated. With all those drawbacks, I'll just do better

I use alternate hand grips. but swap each set....alternate one way then the other way....Ive never known anyone to overdevelop either side?

I do palms in, but I only do piddly 60kg deadlifts :pfft: (and I still use straps  )

why would you need straps for 60kgs ?

Um cause I have weak hands luigi and would drop it, it slips after about 8 reps. I go a bit heavier most is 100kg for 8 DL. Could probably do alternate hand grip as that does work for me but I like wearing my gloves and straps then I don't get poor little sore hands :pfft: When I decide to give PL a crack I will give up my girlie habits

IMO nothing ruins girly hands faster than deadlifting! They are the King of callous makers! But, they are also king for improving grip strength - throw away the straps BG!

And, yes Greek Adonis, bruises down your shins are a mark of good form!

What about those with stubby fingers OB?

I do not know of any PLs who alternate their grip, I know of lifters who at a comfort zone range 8 and above who try this, but once it gets up they resort back.

You have one grip which is your strongest and you go with that. It is usually your strongest hand palm facing you and weakest palm facing away,

....Ive never known anyone to overdevelop either side?

If you do something one way long enough, it will happen. But not to the degree of what a BB would expect in rep ranges and size.

Does anyone else scrape the hell out of their shins or is this just my poor technique? :)

Thats how you get a blood sample from a PL, just use the Pls band aid Duck Tape and Toilet Paper

And, yes Greek Adonis, bruises down your shins are a mark of good form!
I have not heard of the hook grip up until how I will have give that grip a go.

Prepare for some interesting sensations around your thumb

Thanks for posting the hook grip up Old Bull. I tried it for the first time today. I never really liked alternate grip, always felt strange to me. Hook grip, aside from the sore thumb, helped my form and was stronger than the basic palms facing in grip. I'll have to work on it though so I can go heavier.
