New to NZ

Hey there,

I have just arrived in NZ from the UK. I have competed in two amateur shows in the figure categories. I am a physio and have a new job out here and am looking to compete here at some point.

I am currently living in Wellington and want advice on what the best gyms are (equipment vs value) and want to get back on my supplements and wondered if anyone knows where I can get hold of Reflex protein as this was what I used back home.

Any advice would be great. THANKS

Les Mills is good - branches in Wellington and the Hutt

Bodyworks has a branch by the railway station, and one in Porirua

Club Physical, in the "Old James Smith Building" corner of Cuba St and Manners Mall, and in Kilbirnie...

Powerhouse on upper Taranaki St

I've used Les Mills on the Terrace, not a big fan of that one, like Bodyworks Thorndon, light, airy and (apart from the social hour 4:30-5:30pm) reasonably easy to get the gear you want when you want it.

Can't say that I've heard of Reflect Protein - most of the major US brands are available, along with local brands.

Good luck, and welcome

Wow everybody is so friendly and helpful thank you for your posts!

I will try Les Mills as everyone i asked at work had also heard or been there, it is kinda far away from where I am staying (Kandallah) but I will give it ago plus try some closer?

Good to hear you can get Reflex here, also might Check out Xtreme as not got too much money at the moment and am looking for a place to live.

Thanks again everyone for your posts

Are you going to the gym from home, or from work, and what part of town is work in?

Living in Khandallah, prob your nearest option if you don't want to go into town would be Johnsonville City Fitness in Broderick Road, J'ville. I'd have to say it's good - but not great. Their DBs are a good range, bb's and racks less so. All the iron's down in the basement.

If you're working in town, Bodyworks on Thorndon Quay has a carpark which normally has space (apart from the 4:30-6pm rush). It's only about 500m or so north of the Railway Station. Les Mills on the Terrace is closer than Xtreme, and there's a couple of small gyms in the CBD, I think one of them's called Habit (or some such) - know nothing about them tho.

Thanks again for all your help and advice - its been awesome.

I'm working in Khandallah which is why I'm also living there - trying to keep the petrol to a minimum at the moment :)

I will try City Fitness as it is close by, but may have to take a trip to Les Mills just to see what all the talk is about hehe

Thanks SamWall for the tip on Reflex - I found it being sold here which is cool.

Well once I get settled in properly I may have to think about getting myself sorted for a comp early next year

Welcome, PhysioFit.

You've already got some excellent advice about the gym options here in the Wellington region, so I can't add anything there.

I am the local Executive member and Event Organiser for the NZ Federation of Bodybuilders Inc (NZFBB), so if you need to know anything about our organisation and/or events, please let me know. I'm organising the NZFBB NZ National Champs here on Oct 18 - it's definitely be a show you won't want to miss.

Also, come along to a FREE bodybuilding seminar/workshop I are running in conjunction with NABBA NZ in 3 weeks time - at Club Physical Kilbirnie on Sunday, Aug 31, 1pm - 3pm.

Send me a pm if you want any more info about any of the above!
