NZ Strongest Man @ Big Boys Toys

Recommended Posts

Thought I'd give the heads up on this now, either for those who want to watch and for the possibility that a few of you may decide to compete.

It's on the 15th and 16th November at Big Boys toys, Akl showgrounds. Strongman should be on at 9am, 11pm, 1pm and 3pm on each day, in the main arena with the motorbike shows etc. Memphis Meltdown is sponsoring the show- yes... Big Nuts.

Events are:

Day 1

Truck pull with harness and rope- 25m

Log clean and press for max weight- 5 attempts- starting 75kg

Anvil Carry for max distance- 160kg

Farmers walk for time- 100kg cylinders each hand for 50m

Day 2

Tire flip- 25m- 12 flips with +- 350kg tire

Log clean and press for reps- 95kg

Hercules hold/suitcase hold- 117kg per hand for time

Atlas stones- volcanic rocks 80,99,114,126,139kg onto 1.2m barrels.

There will be prizemoney of 3000$ for the top 10 comeptitors. Those of you who are serious about competing should start getting your butt into gear. I'd like to see a guy like SamWelly have a go at this. Mike Zero unfortunately will be at the Oceania champs at this time so he's out.

If you're keen to compete I'd suggest having at least a 200kg deadlift, if not, this isn't your show. Overheading 100kg+ on a bar would be helpful as well, otherwise the log lift will prove impossible. This is not a very heavy show at all, so conditioning will come into it in a big way. Though if you're weak, conditioning won't matter.

I'll post more details as I get them.

Good stuff guys.

Yes Luigi, I'll be competing in it. Hoping to come in pretty strong and decently conditioned, though my focus will be first on Oly lifitng nationals in October. Ultimately I want to move in strongman as my main training focus after I get my clean and jerk over 200kg.

Doubt it will be televised though. There will end up being youtube vids, but probably not much more. Maybe TV news as well.

Mat R and his team always put on a good show and staging it in the main arena has always gone down really well with the crowd. In previous years the likes of Big Levi , Reuben DeJong, Nick MacNamee, Matt Rossiter and under 100kg champ Andrew Soutar always put on a great display of strength/power and with the new boys like Big Mac coming through it will be no different this year. If you are in the area or just planning a trip to 2008 BBT have a look at these guys do their thing. Its simply awesome!!

Thanks Tonka, I hope to continue that fine line of kiwi-strongman. Reuben DeJong told me he is planning to compete this year, which would be great. Of course getting Levi out for this would be good, but not likely to happen.

Mate that sounds awesome, would def be keen to give it a go. How many competitors are you aiming/hoping for? Might be easier to give you a call about it?

Sure thing mate, hook me up with a PM and I'll get you some details over the phone. I'd anticipate about 7 guys or so doing this, the biggest field ever is 22, but those days are unfortunately past. Being a 2 day comp it might also make some guys not want to compete because it will demand a decent amount of physical prep. Personally, I'm just competing, so don't really care how many turn up, though the more the merrier, the stronger the better.

hey big mac when is the next strongman comp?? Might be keen on doing some next year if i can get my leg and shoulder strength up to par.

There's a few comps on but they aren't publicised well.

Aussie crew run the SI shows, Matt R runs NZ Strongest Man & one at Auckland Highland Games. Levi's been talking about doing something as well.

Try the Easter Highland games in Hastings as a first hit out - reasonably light events tho.

There's 3 of us from Napier/Hastings heading up for BBT's this year.

Nate, well, I'm going to give it my best shot. I'm bigger, stronger and more importantly, fitter than I was last year, so that should help.

I think we have 11 confirmed competitors. Being a 2 day show, a bunch of guys pulled out because it's not going to be over in 3 hours. I take it Darcy pulled out?
