There's nothing wrong with machines in general unless they are poorly designed or they put you in a position that just isn't right for you.

Some of them don't have enough adjustments to be able to get comfortable in and this can lead to injuries. If you feel like a specific machine is doing you some damage or if the movement just feels wrong, don't keep using it - either adjust it until it feels OK or find something else for that bodypart.

I would say however that using absolutely nothing but machines may be a bad idea as you'll never develop the small muscles that stabilize parts of your body. Some people would advise you to totally avoid machines for this reason but I think the concept of stabilizers has been overblown and having some machine exercises in your routine isn't going to ruin your body.

In your case, a combination of both machine and free weight exercises for each bodypart would be ideal. For example, if you're doing machine press for chest, then maybe do something like dumbbell press as well.

Personally, I prefer free weights and I use them when I can but I have no aversion to machines and I'll make use of them when I need to.

Yeah the gym I go to has 3 different chest press machines and a choice of different machines for other body parts as well as db & bb , I alternate.

I allso use all the machines at each work out , 3x10 on all as well as bench pressing my kids who L.T.F.H.O :pfft:

I agree with Ash.

Another point in favour of machines (and I'm not sure whether this applies to you or not) is they can be useful for teaching beginners the basic movements, and establishing mind-muscle connections. Once you've got the motion ingrained, you can then transfer it across to free weights.
