Eastside Barbell Christchurch

Just thought I'd do a write up of the gym I've been training at this year.

Eastside is located in central city Christchurch, on St. Asaph street which makes it very accessible. It's run by a group of Powerlifters, some of which have been Oceania, Commonwealth and World Champions. So unlike a lot of commercial gyms the owners know what it's like and what you need to reach your goals. It has a lot of equipment, some of which you wouldn't find at any other gyms. Here's a list just off the top of my head:

-2x Power Racks

-2x Competition Benches

-GS Boss Bench

-Decline Bench

-Incline Bench

-GHR

-Reverse Hyper

-T-Bar Row

-Standard deadlift platform

-Massive cable station

-Cable row

-Standing calf raise machine

-Leg Press

-2x Pulldowns with various different handles

-2x Deadlift platforms for bands

-4x Oly bars, including a certified comp bar

-Safety Squat Bar

-Giant Camber Bar

-2x Curl Bars

-A lot of plates; 50's, 25's, 15's, 10's, 5's, 2.5's

-Certified plates (used in competitions)

-Bands/chains

-Boards for board presses

-Adjustable boxes & foam

-Dumbbells up to 50kg+

-Grip stuff, a Rolling Thunder and Grippers

-Chalk/talc

I owe the club a lot. At the start of the year my best squat was 230kg, best bench 125kg, best deadlift 240kg. Now thanks to the vast experience/knowledge of the members and access to the right gear I've increased my best lifts to 272.5kg/175kg/290kg.

Eastside Barbell is for sure the best gym in Christchurch to increase your performance in not only Powerlifting but Bodybuilding, Rugby, Athletics, anything - ESB caters to the lot. If you live in Christchurch, you're serious about your chosen sport and you don't train there, you're selling yourself short of a better training environment and a better performance.

I took some quick shots that I'll upload later on. Any questions/queries just ask! :)

Hi There

I am a director of Canterbury Sports Performance Centre (CSPC) Which has Eastside Barbell Club as a local club within.

Thanks Mike Zero for your complimentary writeup. CSPC has been established to provide a venue for performance oriented atheletes to train - any field from lifters to throwers to rowers and everything inbetween. Many atheletes are not catereed for at run of the mill Gyms so we dare to be different. The main requirement for any aspiring athelete is the enviroment - where there are other atheletes looking to achieve results, learning from others as a placeto develop a network of information. The Gym is not manned so only experienced weight trainers can train there(with training partners), and Luigi you dont have to be really strong but if that is what you want we can certainly help - we are launching the gym formally soon, we have and are looking for more personal trainers to use the venue for their own clients. If anyone is interested my cell 029 777 7710 Cheers

Being a ChCh lad i have to be honest i have not been down to ESB, I keep say i will go and have a look. but from everything i hear you guys have a great environment down there. I knwo a few lifter s that train down that way and they wouldnt be there if it wasnt the right place to be serious about their goals, Might have to put it at the top of the list of things to do next week.

  • 1 year later...

Thanks for the positive comments guys. We are a 24 hour gym. Members get their own key and they are free to train at anytime as long as they are not in the gym alone. We want our members to achieve their potential and that's why we believe in the best quality equipment and real atmosphere.

I will PM you guys more details as I don't want this forum to deteriorate into advertising. :)

Great vid MZ. Must come down for a workout some day. :D

I'll be down on 18 Sept if you're keen for a train on Friday night?

Might get all of my weights out of the way earlier in the week and do the implements (Stones, farmers walk, tyre etc) instead??

Hopefully can convince big Matty A, Mike Fry and co to be there?
