Brisbane / Muscle Memory

At the end of August I'll be heading off to Brisbane, to try set up a new life for me and my little family.

I be staying with my mate for a couple weeks while I get set up.

He has a computer so I'll be checking in with you guys while Im over there to keep up with my and your journals.

We have been trying hard to make it work here for so long, but just keep running in to brick walls.

The struggle is becoming too much to bare and I have an obligation as a Father to provide a good life for my Son.

I have been without good protein now for almost 2 days and this will last maybe until we move.

I have been told there are great opportunities for someone with my skills and drive, and a couple company's I have spoken to said they'll will pay me bloody good money to live, train and work over there.

As much as I love New Zealand, I would be stupid to pass up a chance to pull ourselves out of this slump.

As far as weight training goes, my biggest worry is that over this time of moving I wont be able to do much strength building and probably wont be able to keep my protein levels very high. So Im under no delusion that I will lose much size and strength.

I read once a long time ago about muscle memory and how if you had size and strength once, that even if you lose it, when you finally pick the weights back up again it wont take to long to get it all back.

Is this true? has anyone here experienced this?

I know Im not that big and strong anyway, but what I have got I have poured a lot in to, so its gonna kill me to lose so much and the thought that I may have to start again almost from scratch.

Good luck with the move man  Hope it all goes well. I once read they did a study of about 20 bodybuilders who stopped weight training for 12 weeks and most of them didn't lose much at all. Muscle or strength, ofcourse it will deplete a bit but not a huge amount.

Just keep eating as good as you can and when you get back into the gym, you'll probably be better off, give your shoulder time to fully heal etc.

I went 11 months without going to the gym or eating properly (80 grams of protein was a high protein day!)

Took me about 3 months to get my strength back. Really sucks at first, huge loss of ego doing a lot less weight than when you were doing last time you were in a gym, but you gotta keep the head down and you'll improve every session.

Think of this as doing the body a whole lotta good and getting a well earned break.

Don't worry too much bud, that'll only do the wrong things to the bod and brain. Yeah muscle memory is a great thing and yep just take it easy at first once you're back into it, just to take care of those muscles and prevent them from being too sore. Remember mate that there's a lot you can do around your house to keep your strength up, easyas

Triceps dips, pressups/pushups, wall squats, abs, if you have no weights at home you can still do bicep curls with waterbottles filled with stones....mate you don't need a gym while you're in this phase (tho motivations always better) just stick those earphones in crank the music up and go for it.

Hey also use visualisation man, I read a good report about a scientist wiring up some athletes and asking them to visualise their sport and he found that every muscle contracted/fired in sequence just as if they were performing the sport
