Some stone lifting with the Kiwi Stoneman

Some of you may find this interesting, took a trip to train with Regan Bridge, who lifts exclusively with natural stones, loading them to barrels and shouldering them. He's bull strong and completely schooled me on the day. I was in awe.

yeah but its completely round which makes the lift that much harder, plus he also has to lift it higher. a huge lift.

He was also able to push it against the bar he had to get it over, which makes it that much easier. Plus is it really that easy to rotate that stone while it's on your lap?

the stones are squarer and have more edges to grip an hold and stop it rotating so easily, check out the first guy with the more roundish rock and how much problems he had with trying to stop it spinning every time he tried to get it near his chest.half the battle with trying to get it to chest height is trying to stop it spinning and falling down.

I didn't dispute that. No need to repeat yourself.

Wow... this thread got long quickly.

I'm the first guy in the vid, many of you would call me morbidly obese. :P

Regan is about 5'11 and 103kg, extremely strong for that size, obviously doesn't train for hypertrophy or do any isolation stuff.

To be honest, stone lifting really comes down to the shape of the stone. Generally a perfectly round stone is easier than a natural stone. You can go anywhere in the world and an Atlas stone is an Atlas stone. Natural stones seem to have a life of their own.

Is that 522lb Atlas stone harder to lift than the tombstone? Absolutely, maybe not a heck of alot, but you would have seen how easy that tombstone was to load once he had it set up, it basically doesn't roll at all. Plus he could interlock his fingers round it, a much stronger position.

That 154kg natural stone was really tough because there is nothing to grip on it and it's nature is to spin once it hits the lap. I've loaded Atlas stones and they're a million times easier to load as its the same motion every time.

Before the 154 I used a 142kg stone and that was a breeze, it literally felt 40kg lighter because it didn't spin like crazy.

What we need in NZ is a bunch of concrete Atlas stones, they're a great spectacle at shows and strongman comps, and will help future guys going to Aussie or World strongest man or the like.

How are your knees and shins, Jono? There was one moment in the middle that made me wince. The boulder slipped, and well, it looked painful. :o

They're fine aye, bunch of people commented on it. I'd just loaded that stone by basically one-motioning it, and wanted to lift it higher. Moment it hit my lap it started rolling again and ended up landing on my quad and knee. It was red for a while but didn't hurt. I was more worried cause I'd just dented the barrel!

Lower back still felt a bit touchy on squats, 4 days later I wasn't willing to push it more than 230x5.

Good job Jono, Regan is certainly a freak and proves size doesnt matter when it comes any kind of lifting...its all about technique! Do you know anyone in NZ that makes atlas stones? I had a friend in the States try making some himself using a a large beach ball (as a cast) and some concrete...it worked but his stone was too smooth and he couldnt grip it...plus the fact that it weighed close to 180kg!

Do Thommo and the boys at Get Strength make any stones?

Mr N- Absolutely. You can squeeze it all you want, but if the stone is in the wrong place it will fall/roll.

Haha Reuben. Yeah I'm wary of going down the beachball route. Typically a 180kg stone won't be lifted by anyone except the top pro's unless they use tacky.

Thommo and the guys have 3 moulds to about 155kg, but haven't made any, nor do I know of any immediate plans to make some. Unfortunately due to the cost of the Slaters moulds, they're not willing to lend them out.

I'm debating getting hold of some of them and hiring them out/ working out some sort of deal with a bunch of guys.
