Moving to Christchurch, need to find a good gym?

Hi everyone, my family and I are relocating to Christchurch soon and leaving my beloved West Auckland(sigh). So i'm posting to check out the gym scene in Christchurch.

Were moving to Rolleston, so some factors that would be important would be proximity, BBuilding friendly and reasonable cost and availability of equipment.

Gym Rats already given me some good leads on this(thanks), but any other help would be much appreciated as I don't know the area that well.

I also live at Rolleston and though the local Community Centre has a small gym, I go to Pro-Fitness. The Community Centre plan to expand in the very near future and take on a lot of new equipment - I'll still go to Pro-Fitness. Pretty good place, good lot of people, helpful and also due for a big revamp.

10 years ago perhaps Spector LOL!, But seriously just a heads up from people who live in or have spent a bit of time training in Christchurch is what i'm after.

I don't just want to waste money stumbling into a gym if it's not kitted out for/Bodybuilding friendly.

Nothing against most commercial gyms, but a low key gym with hard training guys/girls is the type of environment I prefer. Not a cafe disguised as a gym.

umm chriton cobbers, which is were i and a few others on here train at

pro-fitness is pretty bb friendly but a lot of posers

every other gym iv been to in chch has been more geared towards the person looking to lose a few pounds while watching tv.

not sure about out near rolleston, not somewhere one would visit unless living there.

Crition sounds good Luigi, low key and good value. But I checked the opening hours on another thread and they are all over the show, with my new job i'll be training either early or late plus maybe Sunday's so i'm not sure that will work out but thanks anyway i'll check it out.

At present, I train between clients, usually mid morning or mid afternoon, but the new job I'll be starting is more of a 7.30-5ish thing so i'll be looking at either before work or after work plus weekends.

It's a shame in a way becuse as a PT I can train during the quiet hours and it has minimal impact on my family, but the new job is going to throw me a curve ball, I don't really want to spend 4 weeknights away from my wife and son, that IMO is too selfish. I might try for 2 nights plus Sat/Sun mornings, that way I can still keep up a 4 day split off season.

Good luck bud! I hope you find a gym that fits in with you.....I know the damn feeling when you move cities and spend ages looking for a good gym that doesnt pack at home mums with their 4wds badly parked across 2 good gym carparks.... :pfft:

Hey Matrix

I've just moved to Auckland from Christchurch, so I've just been through the opposite transition!

To put it simply there are two larger "commercial" gyms in Christchurch. Pro-fitness (located in Northwood and the City) is one, and Les Mills (in Ferrymead and the City).

Rolleston is probably a good 30-40 minutes drive from either of those two city clubs. Both have good equipment and friendly staff etc.

There are a few smaller gyms you might like to consider, but unfortunately, they often don't have the range of weights you might need. Critchon Cobbers (near the City) is a good gym but gets really cramped at peak times (smaller space too so feels more cramped than other gyms). Body Tamers is located at Jellie Park (a swim centre) but not a great range of equipment and probably too far away from you. The Clarendon is in the central City but it's one of those health club type of places where you get given a towel and soap etc and filled with accountants and solicitors doing their obligatory 15 minutes for the week.

IMO your best bet is either Pro-Fitness or Les Mills city clubs. I trained at Pro for 5 years and there is a good group of BBers who train there (mostly led by the awesome Mike Debenham).

Best of luck with the move! I miss ChCh but am enjoying living here now. Take some polypro and you'll be Jake :)

Thanks Fit Kate, thats really good info I appreciate you taking the time to qive me an in depth answer.

I just qualified for the NABBA Nationals at the weekend and October will be the only chance I get as a Novice to compete in them so i've got to make a descision on which gym i'm joining and if i'm doing the Nationals very soon!

Between a lcity shift, new job, finding a new gym and possibly training for the Nationals, Matrix is going to be a very busy boy in for the next couple of months!

Fitness Canterbury is another. Its near the top end of Wairakei Rd close to the airport. My girl use to work there back in the day and said its a pretty good gym. I'm not sure what the BBer scene is like.

SM, from my understanding of the rule, if you palce first in your class you have the remainder of that year to compete in that class. e.g I won the Nov Athletic Tall so I qualify as a Novice for this years Nationals in October, but after that I will be considered an Open competitor because I placed first in my regional event.
