Thanks for the comments here, everyone. (And to those I talked to privately on this issue, thanks to you guys, too.)

My gut instinct was the smack talk had been driving people away. That’s been confirmed by Flamer. I think when a bodybuilding site starts losing members because it’s not focused enough on bodybuilding, we need to be concerned.

Having said that, this site's had over 4,200 visitors in the last month. Obviously, we can’t please everyone. But when it comes to choosing a direction for the website, I have to err on the bodybuilding side. That’s why people come. That’s why we’re here.

We don’t want to be forum Nazis, and squash all traces of humour. I love the occasional witty comments that pop up. One comment doesn’t interrupt the discussion and yes, it does make the place more interesting. But the constant war of trash talk is not clever or witty. Each “your momma” joke tries to outdo the last, and it goes on for pages – and that’s where the problem is.

The trash talk war has two effects… It effectively locks the topic, making further discussion impossible. This makes it particularly uninviting to newbies who tend to sit back and wait a bit before posting. Secondly, it pisses off everyone else who goes to read the new posts, thinking there’s been more discussion on the original topic, only to find a pile of rubbish.

If you want to talk smack/trash/rubbish (whatever we call it), that’s fine. But start your own topic to do it in. We already have a forum for this – it’s called General Chitchat. If it ends up being swamped with “rubbish” topics, then maybe we’ll reassess things and set up a dedicated forum. For now though, put them in Chitchat. This means there should be no more rubbish posts in legitimate topics.

We’ll try this approach for a bit and see how it goes. As I said earlier, I really don’t want to bring out the banning stick, so here’s hoping this works.

fair enough

i also get annoyed at the stupid banter and lame jokes that take over threads, usually caused by a new member who comes in and stirs shit i might add

perhaps you could make a rule pseu that for the first 2 weeks of a new member account if 1 post is trashtalk then they get a permanent ban, this would sort out members such as king leonidus who join up only to abuse other members every single post they make turning entire threads to shit.
